Fun Food Facts: Fruit Flavored Snacks

I was never a big fan of fruit snacks, but even I know Gummies are a widely popular sweet. Kids love them and one of their favorite kinds are the Gummy Bear. They are usually sold in packets and are made mostly of corn syrup, sucrose, gelatin, starch and water. They were invented in Germany by Hans Riegel in 1922. Other kinds of popular brands are the Fruit Roll-Ups, Apple Chips, Fruit Bars, and Freeze-Dried Fruit. And interestingly another type of candy which can be included in this group is the Jellybean. And with Easter almost here, that is one fruit flavored snack I do enjoy. How about you? Fruit Snacks are not actual fruit. Although they may contain fruit juice, they don't contain the amount of fiber in fruit or have its texture. If you read up to this point your wondering when I'm going to get to the "real unusual fun food fact!" Well, I won't keep you in suspense any longer, here it is... ***Why do fruity snacks look so shiny? "Fruit-flavored snacks shine because of car wax." That's right, the same wax that is used to make your car shiny and protected from the elements, carnauba wax provides that glossy sheen. So, will you (and your children) still be eating Jellybeans or other fruity snacks in the future? Were you ever a Gummy eater as a kid? Did you have a favorite kind? I never knew they used real wax in these fruit snacks. Good to know. I like jelly beans from time to time. The red ones have always been a favorite.

I did not know that they use this car wax. I am not sure why it was passed the test for mass production by the authority.

It does seem like it is an unhealthy additive. It's surprising what additives companies put on food products. I would think car wax would be harmful to eat? But I found out there is not enough to be harmful and it passes whole right through our digestive system without melting like real wax would. Fun jellybean fact: Jellybeans were originally a Christmas candy until about 1930.

Boy am I glad I rarely eat sweets unless it's actually the fruit. I wonder if the carnauba wax is what causes them thar shine noses so many women need to go powder

I'm not too crazy about sweets though so I wouldn't be one to buy the stuff. I've noticed that cucumbers can be awful shiny too and I'm not buyin the whole 'it won't hurt ya' thingy, wax isn't food and I don't want it in my body.

I did a little research about that car wax fact. Seems kind of gross to ingest that into your body. But I found out there is not enough to be harmful, and it passes whole right through our digestive system without melting like real wax would. I never had them and the only fruit snacks I love are the french "pâtes de fruits" that are made with real fruits and that are not at all shiny.

A much healthier choice for sure I only have Jellybeans during Eastertime. I do buy fruit flavored bar on occasion. Not so fun facts: Because of their sticky texture fruit snacks will stick to teeth. One package of fruit snacks equals 2 1/2 tsp of sugar. So, treat it like having a sweet desert. Fun jellybean fact: Jellybeans were originally a Christmas candy until about 1930.

@dgobucks226 I never tried Jellybeans. For Easter we have chocolate eggs, the small one filled with a chocolate cream and the very big ones, hollow eggs, that contain a "surprise". I loved when I was a kid.

@LadyDuck The cream filled eggs are one of my favorites. Oh, I would like an egg with a surprise in them. What was usually inside? Yes, I agree. Definitely fewer things to worry about and lots more fun stuff

@dgobucks226 ooh I never knew this fun fact. Yes they do lie to use of cause, but I do chew gum not everyday cause I admit I love chewing that's for sure. I do chew both but mostly the sugary ones are always at my disposal and they are also affordable compared to the "sugaless" types of gum as they claim

I agree. Kids are tempted with too many sugary products. I will have a few jellybeans at Easter but that's it. Not so fun facts: Because of their sticky texture fruit snacks will stick to teeth. One package of fruit snacks equals 2 1/2 tsp of sugar. So, treat it like having a sweet desert.
