The renowned psychologist, Serghev Gungow, was talking in a local radio show, about the trend these days, for people to be themselves, first, despite all else.
Here is the transcript of his talk:
"In this day, and age, we are often told to be true to ourselves, and to be our self, above all else."
"And yet, this old quote from a great and ancient sage, says the opposite to us:"
"'When I let go of who I am, I become what I might be.'"
"Lao Tzu, a Chinese Philosopher, said this."
"So, from this too, we must break free."
"Do not be trapped into the trap of your just trying to be yourself."
"We need to let go of who we think that we are with our mind, and find who we really are, which is a spiritual being, or soul."
"Some people say that they will never apologise for who they are, but if they are only mind people, perhaps, they should think again."
"If our mind has led us to do things that our heart would not agree with, we do need to apologise for us doing those things, and for us being like that."
"A mind, on its own, going on its own, gets lost in itself, and never becomes more than itself, but when linked to your soul, your mind takes on its real true role expanding itself into higher levels of conscious thinking within it, stimulated by its soul energising it in its ideas, which it then puts into thought."
"The ultimate denial is to live from your mind alone, thinking that there is nothing greater in store for you, than what your mind feeds to you."
"Wake up to the connection to your soul, and live a fuller life of love, for God, for yourself, and for all mankind too."

The old psychologist was already old, but he knew that age is of the mind, and the body, not of our soul.

Yes, and due to aging, I have become very realistic.

I also find that due to my aging, I am moving away from my body, and mind, and embracing that unaging part of myself more now too, my soul, as some call it.
Some part of me does not change, even as the body and mind grow weak, and more feeble, that spiritual part of me stays the same to me, vibrant life itself, still.

Yes, even Buddha said something similar, when he said that if we drop the desires of our mind, we will live from the love in our heart a true life, living from our soul self, not a limited attached life, living from our mind alone, anymore.

I feel the same way.
Some part of me hasn't aged, and this part is the same now as it was 60 years ago too.
Our soul lives on forever, l think. It's there guiding us in our life through our heart.
We are more than just physical beings, we are spiritual beings too.

I have heard a point of view that we should forget who we think we are, and make our minds empty of all prejudices, some of which are ingrained and inborn. Allow the warm waft of creation to energize our thoughts, and keep open our minds and hearts, and in harmony.
We have to keep learning, unlearning, and relearning the basics lest we lose track due to our complacency and inertia. Such an approach keeps us alive every moment. We need to find meaning every moment, but a closed mind will shut out our hearts too. The soul also remains stifled, and that is a life truly wasted then.

I guess that you are right there, our soul can remain stifled, in some ways, if it is not allowed to play its role in our life, but on the other hand, I would expect our soul to still be fulfilling a role in the background, recording our deeds, attitudes, and karma, for the next time that it gets the chance to live as us again too.
Our soul has access to all knowledge, I would posit, and it just wants to experience knowledge for real in life, and mix knowledge with love to create truth.
Living truth then comes alive in us when our soul is allowed to dance with us, with its energy of love infusing us with real life too.

@Shiva49 Perhaps only the outskirts of Heaven could be so infected, and yet, if we believe the Bible, at one stage, such infestation led by the Devil, looked like taking over Heaven, until God kicked him out.
Maybe God might kick us off of the Earth too, if we infest it with nastiness, too much more.

@innertalks The soul is a spark of our creator residing in every being. We ignore it at our peril - so to say.
Yes, through our soul we can access knowledge and wisdom - why ignore such a ride and skim only the surface and semblance of living here? It will amount to a waste of resources that are ready on tap and given for free.
Sadly, as a species, we not only do not do justice to our innate ability but indulge in wanton destruction too. And what is more, we want to infest heaven too with such a lifestyle carried forward!
