Things we saw yesterday

The collage shows some of the things that we saw yesterday on our drive through a small part of Co. Mayo in Ireland. We passed a neolithic wedge grave (top left). It is one of the four types of gallery graves. There were steps to go over the rock wall to get closer but the grass was very wet and we couldn’t afford to get our shoes wet. Top right is a beautiful stone bridge. I love these bridges, many of which have arches like this. Lower left shows parts of the hulls of two boats which were on the pier in Killala. The hull on the left is an interesting shape I thought. Lower right shows the ruins of an old dwelling. There are dozens of these throughout Ireland but what stories they could tell.

Is that a "Roman Bridge"? Every time that I see a stone bridge I learn it was made by Romans.

@JudyEv Even here we went to visit an area, we saw a very old bridge and it was "... built by the Romans". They worked so much in those days that the actual generations are obliged to rest.

@LadyDuck The influence of the Romans was just amazing, wasn't it?

It could well be but I don't know the name of it so I couldn't vouch for it one way or the other. But I hear what you're saying. Throughout England, we were always coming across something made by the Romans.

I was going to do a whole discussion on it but there is really too much information to try to condense. The wedge tomb is only one type of gallery grave. We have seen a lot of old gravesites/tombs/dolmens/stone circles etc here. All are interesting.

That gravesite looks like a pile of deconstruction debris. I suppose that dwelling was abandoned because they couldn't or wouldn't get the thatched roof replaced. I understand little critters like to move into the thatching. The stonework on it still looks fairly solid.

The stone walls of the old buildings look very solid indeed. It just seems to be the rooves the disintegrate.
