Are these things fated?

Many people believe in fate. Fate is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as: "the development of events beyond a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power."
I don't believe in fate per se, except for two things: Death and one's partner in life.
I believe that we have already a fated time of death and that no matter what we do, we will die at this designated time. I also believe that as soon as we were born, there is already someone meant for us in this life.
Hence, I see these two things, death and soulmate/partner as fated. The rest of our life stories would depend on the choices that we make. So, we are responsible for the life that we lead.
I'm curious as to what MyLotters think of fate and determinism. Are all the aspects of our lives fated or are they predetermined?

Oh, my.
Yes, in ways, fate is determined. But in many ways, it's determined by the person. Making the wrong choices in life, picking the wrong partner, refusing to do what's right and honest and good...in a heartbeat, one bad decision can ruin a life and the lives of others as well.
Unfortunately, some people's fate is determined by other people--parents who aren't good parents and possibly should never have even had children, parents who put their children in harm's way, growing up in a bad environment, and on and on it goes. Adults making poor life choices can affect what happens to their children and the choices they have to make as well.

No, you don't sound strange at all. Some things do seem to be fated.
Some people repeatedly pick the wrong partner in their lives, over and over. Some make poor choices about other things that affect them or their entire families or futures. Some people have all the tools in line to make the right choices, and they blow it--over and over again.
No one way is right or wrong, at least not in my opinion. Fate is fate in many instances. We were given brains to be used in good ways, and for our own good as well as to guide others. It's up to us to use our gifts in wise ways, and we do not always make good choices in this, or things just happen to change the path of where we meant to be at that time.
If any of that makes sense...I'm getting tired and might just be babbling here...

@MarieCoyle No, you're not babbling. I know what you mean. There are things we cannot control no matter what we do. And for those we can control, we have to make the right choices and use our brains, skills, and talents for good.
Have a good rest, and take care.

Another busy day here...and you are right. Some things are completely out of our control. We can only move forward and hope for better times. Thank you, I did get a few hours of good sleep in, it felt wonderful!

I think some things are fate. But we can override some of it by our actions and what we say to ourselves and others. I believe God has a purpose for our lives and puts others in our path to help us live out this purpose. There are forces that want to interfere and mess up our lives but we can rise above them and conquer them.

Your life is determined by the choices that you make. That's what I believe. Have a good week.

I do believe that our lives are somewhat determined by fate or a divine power. That we all have a purpose here on earth and paths to take. If we detour too far off our path then fate (or divine intervention) will get us back on course.

Some people think that luck also plays a part in each life, but I do not think so.
Fate, though, to my mind has nothing to do with luck, it is the cards that we are dealt to play our lives with, our parents, our place of birth, and who comes into our life, a lot of these things are brought about by what we might call fate, but who knows at some higher level, it is not so much fate, as some higher power directing, and arranging things in the best way for us to gain the most from our lives here.
We call it fate here though, as we are not privy usually to the higher reasons for things happening as they do.
Can God direct somebody's life to go in a certain way, or not then too?
Where does free will, start, and end?
A person's life is their own, but God can create the conditions of its beginnings, as well as bring things into it during it to try to bring about certain learnings for that person, needed by them to grow their soul in greater wisdom.

Wow! Such an enlightening thought. I like your last statement that "God created our life's beginnings and brings about certain learnings in a person, so they can grow their soul in greater wisdom."
I'm also not quite sure when free will starts and ends.
There is a quotation that goes: "Man proposes and God disposes," so, if this is the case, then we still don't have free will because God would have to "approve" or allow our plans to come to fruition.
This is a good topic for debate. What about you Steve (may I call you that?) What do you think about all things not happening unless "approved" or allowed by God?
Thank you.

@innertalks That's a good example. God is an umpire. If you put it that way, then it follows that we have to follow His rules not be called for a "foul". But even then, there are some instances in which people play by God's rules but still suffer in life. They did all they can to lead a good life, but still, they are unhappy or unsuccessful. This makes me think that the person may be paying his sins in his previous life, because how else could you explain his present condition in life?
I like what you said about God letting the game go on, as He watched as an umpire. This would be more acceptable than saying that God is the "director" while we are only the characters acting out what He says on the stage of life..

@Jenaisle Sure, you can call me Steve.
In some ways, the outcomes are still always in God's hands.
We can plan our lives as much as we can, but whether the plans come off, or not, is more up to God, than to us, in a way.
An act of God might put a stop to our plans.
But, we should plan our lives with God helping us, not try to go it alone, and then God will help our plans to play out right if they are a part of his plans too.
God's role is like an umpire, he sometimes stands back, but he ensures that the rules are followed in the end, by sending players off, or bringing about conditions to help them play too, in some instances.
God does not usually interfere, as he is in charge anyway, and what man does is small stuff in its way, but large to man, and God can fix things anytime he wants to do so, but he lets the game go on, as he watches, and also umpires, at the same time too.

Ultimately, the belief on fate varies from person to person. Others believe in destiny while others places emphasis on the power of one's choice. No definitive answer for me.

I believe in fate. In life, there's many things that out of our control, and there's many things that we can control.
I believe that our action will give an effect, either it's good or not. But I also believe all things that happen in life occur by God's permission.
