The Last Time You Tried Something for the First Time

Much to my consternation, I cannot remember which Mylotter convinced me to do so, but today I tried sardines for the first time. I didn’t love them, but I didn’t hate them. I probably will never buy them again, but I’m glad I at least tried them. People always told me they’d never try them because of their smell, and how they look. Neither one looked that bad to me. Perhaps it matters what brand you buy from; at least they are very affordable. When is the last time you tried something for the first time, and what was it? Also, have you ever tried sardines yourself? If so, what did you think?

@Ambiepie I love sardines. I don’t care if they’re from a can or fresh out of the sea. I just love sitting outside a Greek restaurant by the sea eating grilled sardines. What’s not to like?

@Fleura Now see, if I'm ever in a country like that, and there is a restaurant as you described, I will most definitely be ordering fresh, grilled sardines.

I have a fudge pie now, which I haven;t had.last thing I should be eating of course, but I got it for free, so I will choke it down a little at a time. It kind of tastes like a chess pie but with chocolate. It's good, but I have had it now, don't need it again.

I find sardines to be a bit too salty. My husband likes them in mustard sauce.

I saw some in the store that were packed in mustard sauce. Maybe I should try those too.

We used to eat canned sardines regularly when I was a child. Not so much since, but we rediscovered them when the girls were little as they liked sardines on toast. But now we have had to give them up because, as of a couple of years ago, they are no longer classed as sustainable, according to the Marine Conservation Society.

@AmbiePam It was a shock as they used to be so plentiful and cheap. Well they still are cheap - presumably because unscrupulous companies are fishing them all out until there will be none left (and no food for seabirds and whales either).

@Fleura That truly is a shock. I really thought they were everywhere. I can't believe humans have managed to even over fish them.

I don't know if I would ever try sardines. They just sound gross! lol I do like tuna, and things like that...but I don't know how sardines would taste. Hmm...I can't think of the last time I tried something new. I will have to think on that

If you closed your eyes, and someone put one in your mouth, you'd just assume it was some kind of fish you'd had before.

Many of us grew up eating canned sardines. I do prefer the fresh ones, either grilled or pan fried. They are delicious grilled. I like to try new foods, always have, and new recipes as well.

I'm really surprised my dad never ate them. They were so poor they would have been the perfect food. I guess maybe his parents just didn't like them. They only had meat on Sundays because of money, but my dad also said there were two things his neighbors offered him that he refused to eat: sardines, and an opossum.

@AmbiePam I recall a friend opening a can of them and dumping them in a bowl. Now, this will sound so dumb, but I couldn't help it--there was this noise that sort of went--GLOP! and there is no way on earth I could handle even being in the same room with those terrible gross little things. So, so sickening to me.

I like sardines with rice. Sardines can be sautéed with eggs, tomatoes, and onions and it would taste yummy. They are also cheaper than other canned goods, so we always keep one or two in the kitchen cabinet. I tried "balut" the "rotten egg" that foreigners call it, for the first time and it wasn't as bad as I imagined. I like the broth and the yellow portion, but I could never get myself to eat the chick no matter if I close my eyes. They said it was the yummiest part of balut

It definitely does matter..brand. I love sardines but in tomato sauce best..I like the Crown Prince brand. Last time I tried something new was yesterday..it is a dragon fruit..so good. The Asian lady neighbor gave me one.

I am Italian, so I had sardines many times, both fresh (grilled) and canned sardines. The last time I tried something for the first time has been last month. I bought a Turkish cheese that I had never tried before. It was not bad, similar to the Greek Feta cheese.

Pretty got oat "milk" on our last shopping trip because the store was out of almond "milk" which I like and can have... Have you ever tried oat "milk" in your cereal? It doesn't go well with Cheerios but I can eat it when I use it to make pasta... So it will get used up... but why does it taste so weird? I'm not allowed to eat fish of any kind. I'm allergic to it. So no sardines for me, thank goodness!

I love sardines in mustard sauce. My parents always got them when I was a kid. I don't buy them often, but I enjoy them when I do. I think something new is in the diet category. I've tried a couple of different plans in the past year, which haven't worked. Even the one I'm doing now isn't working that well. I'm still hopeful that I will start seeing some downward movement on the scale.

I tried eating anchovies from a pizza a long time ago. I did not like the taste of the anchovies on the pizza that was on the shelf after a customer did not purchase do to a lack of money inside of the pizza parlor.

I'm not that much of a fish person; and I would not try sardines. I haven't tried anything new recently. I did try conch and alligator on one of our trips to the Florida Keys and Everglades. Have a good day.

A lot of people seem to think I'm a little odd for not eating sardines before now. Conch and alligator sound much more appealing than sardines, although alligator would be a little intimidating to me. I'd still try it though. I'm hoping you have a good day as well.

Sardines are very healthy. I don't care how they smell, but they look weird. Some sardines don't have that strong smell. I tried tofu and it was awful. I will never eat that again.

When I was little my dad and I would watch Bonanza and eat sardines. They were my absolute favorite- along with vienna sausages- but now that I'm older I can't stand the smell or the taste of either of them. My dad still loves them of course and I have to run away anytime I hear the can opening. LOL

I recently tried fishing, and I'm vegetarian so I wasn't to keen at doing so at first, although I recently tried it and it was quite some fun, I actually caught a little fish. I think it was a fish called a black tail, not clued up with my fish knowledge , but I was extremely happy that I managed to catch something. It's got me excited about getting my own rod too. But perhaps this time I might consider releasing which didn't do this very time.
