A photo of a mother photographing her daughters

The endurance ride at Ravensthorpe, Western Australia, was held on quite an isolated property to the north of the town. It was all virgin mallee scrub when the couple first went there. The scrub isn’t very high but is very thick. To clear the land, a tractor would be attached each end of a ship’s anchor chain. The tractors would be driven in parallel to ‘chain’ down the scrub. Quite often, husband and wife would drive the tractors. The photo shows the wife taking photos of her two daughters. One daughter and her husband live on the farm; the other daughter is a veterinarian in Esperance some two hours away. The wife also rode on Sunday and I included a photo of her in the collage.

They sound like some rugged people who know how to get things done.

@JudyEv I feel like talking to them would be fascinating. I'd probably drive them nuts with all my questions.

@AmbiePam We asked a lot of questions too. I guess really they are modern-day pioneers as there was nothing but bush in this area when they first arrived.

Wow, that’s hard to fathom: ground so hard it had to be “beaten” with anchor chains! And, for people who’ve never seen an anchor chain, those things are HUGE, heavy, and the chain links are very thick. I’d estimate the chain could be the diameter of a person’s arm!

The chain was dragged along the ground but I think you've worked that out. In my other discussion, I wrote about some farmers building their own, more powerful tractors to cope with the conditions.

I hope you were able to get a photo of all three of them together. I'm sure they'd want to buy one or three of those.

I wonder if I could find someone to "chain" my back yard. It sounds like the whole family is nicely involved.

There are a couple of families who run rides on their properties. There is a lot of work involved.

I thought it was nice. The mother is so proud and the girls find their Mum inspirational as she is still riding and so active generally.

This is a nice photo. Look at the horse on the left, he is looking at the other as he wanted to be the only one in the photo.

@JudyEv Both horses show "an attitude". They are both healthy and shiny, great horses.

Yes. Vince knew the older couple 40 years ago when he lived in the area. We know one daughter because she often rides at the endurance rides.

Nice photo, and beautiful horses! It's hard to believe that there is still any kind of 'virgin' land left on this planet, and that if there is any, that it is still being cleared.

It was back in the 80s when these people moved onto their farm. There were 'conditional purchase' blocks available at the time. The farmers could buy the land at a somewhat reduced rate but had to clear 1,000 acres a year. 10% had to left uncleared.
