Meet Stella

I got a surprise while I was watering. My Stella d'Oro day lily is blooming. It is a miniature plant as compared to traditional day lilies. Okay, looking online they are technically "dwarf" re blooming day lilies. I could buy four plants for $89 plus shipping, but no thanks. I dug mine up for free. The house next door to me used to have some lovely plants. It is abandoned and neglected. The lady's son comes and mows with his riding mower and cuts down everything he can mow over. The back yard is a jungle. I am pleased that before he started mowing down the plants I got a Stella for my own. I may find other things to dig eventually, now that I know no one cares. Or I may find poison ivy. There is a lot of that. I learned about three years ago that the secret to keeping them reblooming is to cut off the dead flowers. Or let them develop into seed pods, then cut them off when ripe. I actually have a baggie of the seeds somewhere. I would not mind having more, they are easy care. Hubby is cooking a frozen pizza. The boil water orders have been lifted.I have had a nice shower. The cats are indoors. All is right with my world.

It is absolutely beautiful! Diana recently took a picture of a couple of her lilies, and sent them to me, but she was annoyed because she hasn't been able to pull the weeds also in the picture. With her recovering hip, and my dad's recovering neck, no one is medically cleared to pull the weeds! Between the two of you, you guys are going to have quite a lot of gorgeous lilies.

There are so many kinds of lilies. They use daylilies a lot in the parks.

I avoid it. Kill it when I can. I have never had it, so I should knock on wood.

@GardenGerty I hope you never get it! Does it actually grow in yards out there? I don't think I've seen it in our neighborhoods but it's always possible it could be out in the hills when we hike.

Stella is a beauty. I have seen so many this morning. The public gardens near the Italian customs have been planted with those beautiful flowers.

Lovely. Glad that you rescued her. There's one in my neighbor's garden right next to the property line in the front where the fence ends, so it's like mine, too.

I think all of the other varieties have been bred from the original tangerine ones.

My first wife and I had several of the Stella D'Oro plants in one of our flowerbeds. They were beautiful. I'm glad you're getting some nice plants from the abandoned house...
