We visited my parents at their place in the middle of nowhere on Friday. On the way back to civilization, we watched dozens of great basin whiptail lizards race across the dirt roads in front of us. Then we rounded the corner onto the last stretch of dirt road, and there was a flurry of motion in one of the bushes along the road.
Burrowing owls! In all the years since my parents first bought their property we've never seen a single one, but there were three of them staring intently at us. With a bit of patience (and a very long lens) I was able to get a few decent photos of them. I think this one might have been a fledgling; when the other two flew off, it retreated into the burrow. Its curiosity got the best of it, though... the series of photos I took shows it steadily peeking further and further out to see what we were doing.

There are a couple living at the local zoological sanctuary, but this is the first time I've ever seen burrowing owls in the wild. I'm so glad I bothered to take my full camera kit with me this time. I debated leaving the 150-600mm lens at home, but that ended up being the only one I used.

Can you share one of your photos? I've never seen a burrowing owl.
