How often do you buy things that you never use?

I have often done this, usually with various components or attachments for my computer. I visit the computer fairs quite regular and find it hard to resist some of the latest technology or gadjets. They are often so desirable that they appear well worth the money, but then I never find a use for them. I have a webcam and a 1 Gb flash drive that I never use, and a scanner and laminator that get used maybe once a year. I still could not part with them and would probably end up replacing them if they broke.

I am pretty frugal when it comes to shopping.... As for my mother in law, I call her the "As Seen On TV Queen". She must have 20 different sets of ginsu cooking knife sets and about 10 differnt kinds of Ab Roller excercise machines. I wish I had that kind of money to blow.

not me. i always buy practical stuffs. not to be a sexist, but it's always the girls rushing for sales find that they end up with things they don't really need. hello? it's cheap yes, but consider whether you need it or not first!

I have to admit that I am guilty as charged. I have bought things I have never used. I also have a webcam which I have never installed, I have a laptop that I rarely use, and I have bought hobby stuff that I have never gotten around to using. I would think I would use that laminator if I had one, but I probably wouldn't. LOL

A laminator can be quite useful, but it does tend to go months before the next use crops up.

My biggest problem with this is buying clothes from a mail-order catalog. There are some of them that I get that don't fit quite right or I don't really like, but I keep them anyway because it's too much trouble to send them back.

My husband does this quite often. I get irritated about it sometimes. I have done it too but its usually something I've bought really cheap at a yard sale. Then I don't feel too bad if I've only paid about a dollar for it.

Mmm I usually do this with kitchen gadgets, for example I bought a steamer for the vegetables, it took about a month for it to come out the actual box! And now its gathering dust because I can't be bothered to use it or learn how to use it properly, so it has been put at the back of a cupboard, I say a cupboard, I don't know where. I've also bought other things for the kitchen also haven't been used!

Oh well, at least these are the type of items that will be useable in years to come.

Phew... probably every day! I read something in the news a couple of days ago about a group of people who decided that for one year, they wouldn't buy anything they didn't absolutely need. They were so happy with the results after the year, they decided to go for another year. I should really join them, I waste way too much money on things I have no use for. And since I'm here... happy new year to you.

I waste a fair bit on items that I do not really need as well. The plus side is that you are a responsible person so I expect that you will only waste money that you can spare. I imagine a lot of people waste money that they cannot spare. Happy New Year to you as well.

I could not agree more, waste money by all means, but not money that should be spent on the family.

Yes, unfortunately it's often the people with the least money who buy most of the useless stuff. It's also amazing to see how many people on welfare own big plazma tv's, big cars and all the latest computers but then say they can't afford to pay for their childrens school meals. That really bothers me.

Many years ago, when I was working at Wal Mart I did this constantly. It got worse when I went to work in receiving, because then I saw EVERYTHING that came in. I am not so much into the technology, because I know enough to know I do not know enough to use the stuff that is out there.

The thing about modern technology is that it gets easy to use all the time.

Sorry about the copiers! But I am guilty of this. I am trying to stop buying things especially clothes. I can't seem to help myself when they go on sale. I don't buy to many computer things.

Well it certainly proves that sales work, you are not the first to admit that they attract you.

Unfortunately, I'm a walmart mom, and I can't seem to stay out of the clearance aisles. I know I don't need them, most of the time I can't even decide if I really want them, but when things are cheap, I tend to buy them =(

This is always a great danger, you can actually spend more money if items are cheap because they are too good to miss.

I'm usually pretty good about not doing this. DH however has tons of stuff that he'll get because it's a good deal, he's been looking for one, or thinks he'll need it. Then we get home, the bag goes onto the table and he forgets about it. We both also will get the kids presents, like for Christmas or birthdays that they never even open. It's sad that we spend that much money, even though it's not a lot.
