How Do You LIke Your Chili?

Chili or Chili con Carne (chili with meat) is a spicy stew containing chili powder or chili peppers, meat, tomatoes and beans. Variations of this recipe number into the hundreds as everyone has his/her own version of chili. There are many chili competitions across the United States; and I doubt that any one concoction tastes the same as another. Opinions differ as to whether tomatoes and/or beans belong in chili. From 1529 there was written evidence of a chili pepper seasoned stew eaten in the Aztec capital, Tenochtitian, now Mexico City. The San Antonio Chili Stand, circa 1893, at the Colombian Exposition in Chicago helped to give many Americans their first taste of chili. Before World War II hundreds of chili parlors were opening up in Texas and other states; and by 1904 chili parlors became more widespread due to the invention of commercially prepared chili powder. Do you like your chili spicy or mild? I like mine mild. Do you like your chili with or without beans? Do you like a lot of beans? I like my chili with a LOT of beans. Do you have your own chili recipe? How do you make your chili? Do you serve your chili with accompaniments? Crackers, cheese, sour cream, with spaghetti (Cincinnati Chili)? There are many, many variations. Do you like it thick or thin? I like mine thick. Photo Credit: Pixabay

I never had it but I've heard about it on mylot and in movies. They seem delicious but I would have to hold the spice.

@LindaOHio That's how I would like it. Not too spicy. How do you eat it? I mean with rice or bread?

One thing I discovered when I went to Hawaii is they don’t put spaghetti in chili, they use rice. No beans. As Don Henley said, “When you add beans to chili you insult both the beans AND the chili.” And, truthfully, I haven’t made chili in eons.

We haven't either. I could eat a whole bowlful of chili with no meat, just beans!

@LindaOHio We have been colonized by your country and we actually have this colonial mentality. Majority of what we eat are influenced by the countries who colonized us. But I'm just not a fan of chili con carne.

I like all forms of chili. From my mid-20s to my mid-30s I was a nationally certified chili judge, and I would travel around the country to judge chili competitions. When I was a property manager for a large student apartment complex near the University of Florida, I would host an annual chili cook off among the residents that would generate hundreds of entries.

@LindaOHio That’s what I loved most about judging competitions. Every chili I sampled tasted different. And so many people had so many different and creative ways to make their chili. It was great.

That's interesting to know about Chili... I like mine beanless, for sure. Not spicy either. I make mine with tomato sauce and other spices/flavorings Definitely have cheese on it, and sour cream.

I once tasted chili con carne in at the Texas Roadhouse and it was okay, I like mine spicy. I ate it with hot pan de sal (bread) and it was yummy. I don't think we have it here though. But perhaps in other Mexican restaurants, there are.

I love chili but I prefer the chili made with fresh chili peppers and jalapenos, I like hot but not so hot that it overshadows the flavors. Oh, I like mine with meat and chili can be made without beans, that's my fav.

We have chili con carne as we have ground beef in ours. We take it mild, with beans and tomatoes and spices, but not alot of them. I love a little grated cheese on the top when I put it into a bowl, but my hubby doesn't like that.

The canned chilis in Latvia were expensive so now and then I made a pot of chili with ground beef, plenty of onions, garlic, tomatoes, beans, and spices. And of course grated cheddar on top, Now I do not want to fuss for myself so I get canned chili from Amazon because they have packages of 6 or more cans,

I have eaten Chili only once. I got stomachache after that and so I didn’t try to eat it anymore. I think the beans were too heavy for my tummy.

I have to have my chili very mild. Since I no longer have a gallbladder I can't tolerate spicy, fatty foods as I once did.
