My taxi was just on time to pick me up for art class this week. It was the minibus taxi again. I was the first one to arrive again and I immediately got my fan out to fan myself. The little doggy didn't come again this week. Maybe his owner's gone on holiday again.
This weeks painting was The Green Man in watercolour.
The tutor showed us how to do it first, then we went and chose which picture we wanted to attempt. When the other tutor had printed out a copy of the pictures we wanted to work from we sat down to draw it out. We taped down the edges of the paper first. I found it very hard to draw it! First the eyes were too far apart and I had to rub one of them out and get it closer to the other. The leaves around his face were also hard and I had to keep rubbing out and getting them in the right position. I'd drawn the leaves on the top left of the drawing, but I couldn't get the leaves in the top left right, so the tutor suggested I turn it upside down and draw them upside down, so I did and that seemed to work.
Now that the drawing was completed it was time to start painting. We did a wash of yellow ochre, but left some of the paper white. When the paint was still wet on the top leaves I sprinkled a bit of salt into it to create a texture to show it's supposed to be made of stone. Where the salt was it took longer to dry, whereas the rest of the paper was already dry. The tutor said she might put it outside to dry for a bit, but then we discovered it was raining! Paul said, if you put it outside in the rain it might improve it! I said, How dare you! He said, I could put mine out too, it might improve that aswell! Anyway the tutor put it infront of a fan instead and that seemed to do the trick.
While I was waiting for it to dry I had a cup of tea and a jammy dodger biscuit. When the painting was dry it was time to add the greens. I got rid of some of the salt first, then I went in with a light green first, then darker greens in the darker areas. Then the tutor said I should try putting in some blue violet but I didn't like what it did to it. The blue violet is on the eye brows if you can see.
The tutor wanted to know if I wanted to do some splash effects with the toothbrush but I couldn't get it to work, so the tutor did it instead!
When it was finished we all went and put them on the floor so we could all look at them and the tutor asked if there was anything we found hard about it! (!) I said, yeah, drawing it in the first place!
Then I saw my taxi arrive through the window so I started to pack up to go. When I went outside it was raining a bit, luckily the taxi was an ordinary car not a minibus to take me home so I could get in quickly and easily out of the rain. When I got home I asked him to book me up for the same time next week again.
When I got in I told Mum all about it but I didn't show her the picture because I want her to wait to see it at the exhibition.

Your artwork looks good..I think that it was worth all the effort that you put in there. I am sure that your mum will be happy to see it at the exhibition. It would be a pleasant surprise.

Thank you very much. I'm glad you like what I did with the leaves around the face, because they were really hard to get right and there was a lot of rubbing out involved before I even started the painting!

Yes, I know! It's something about using the other side of your brain and you're seeing things how they are not how you think they are - or something like that!
