A random thought.

I have a huge maple tree just off of my balcony and I observe it every spring when it buds. I always wondered how many leaves would cover a tree that size. From my observances I noticed that each bud opens up to a cluster of about 20 leaves. Say this tree produces roughly ten thousand buds and each bud produces 20 leaves, that's 200,000 leaves. As the title reveals...just a random thought. Image is of my tree. Forgive the foggy background.

We don't have maple trees here. So one time, a friend from South Korea wrote me a letter and she attached a red colored maple leaf which she laminated. She told me it was autumn there and that was the leaf in autumn. I turned it into a bookmark.

Autumn leaves are so colorful. It is festive just to watch them turn color and fall.

@Starmaiden Very true and since we don't have autumn here, she sent me one maple leaf just to show the colors of autumn.

I like the picture of the tree. And hey, it was random, but at least it was educational.

It's indeed huge. What a good source of oxygen. Is it a sturdy tree that never gets its branches broken during strong winds or storms? I am wondering because it is right beside your balcony. Have a wonderful week.

@Starmaiden Oh, that's sad, but it's good for your safety.

Unfotunately it does lose some of its branches in high, hurricane strength winds. It no longer produces leaves at the very top of it so it is diseased. I love it so much but it must come down.

I like that foggy background, it gives your tree a surreal feel.

I just had to look it up. A healthy mature maple with a 3-foot/0.91-meter diameter trunk carries an estimated 100,000 leaves at a time.

@Starmaiden I think you came up with an excellent estimate based on your observations.

I always look forward to the fall of the year. I really enjoy the foliage on all trees, including the maple.

It's very pretty in the fall. Surprisingly, considering how close to my balcony this tree is, I never have to rake leaves off of my balcony. They never fall on it.

@Starmaiden That is a good thing for you. And I love the fog in your photo by the way. Adds a little extra something.

Counting leaves on a tree would be like counting hair on one' s head (lol)

200,000 leaves that is really a lot of leaves but it sounds about right.

I love maple trees, their leaves are beautiful. When the leaves fall, I like my tree a little less.
