I was shopping Fred Meyers yesterday and was looking for something new to try. It's a thing of mine to find one thing to go outside my norm to try. I saw a pack that said Kumato. Looking closer, I saw they are tomatoes but brown. Seems they are a product of Canada and one must have a special license to grow them. Researching, I read they are originally from Spain. It was developed over ten years of cross breeding by plant specialist Syngenta. They can be green or a purple color but many are brown. They are sweeter and higher in potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A and C. You can eat them at any color stage of growth. I noticed when I eat them, I don't get heartburn like I do regular red tomatoes. I was surprised they were reasonable in price as well. Tonight's dinner is nut and see bread with a Kumato cut up. I have a side of chopped raw cabbage with some cheese and dressing. I think it's fairly healthy. At least from what I have been eating. If you want to read more, here is an article that talks about it. https://cikipedia.com/10-things-didnt-know-kumato

Did you ever see them? I can't believe another discussion was left alone by me after posting. I'm looking through notifications and don't see any for here either. No excuse. I need to do better. I hope you are doing great.

@noni1959 No, we don't have those here. Things happen. It's okay. Thanks. I had to start taking the meds for hyperthyroidism again. The doctor told me my thyroid was working fine six months ago but wasn't happy with the readings from the blood test I had last week. I hope everything is going well for you.

@DaddyEvil I'm sorry to hear that and hope the medication helps. I take levothyroxine for hypothyroidism. Every day I'm doing better.

This is very interesting. I haven't seen a tomato looks like that. It must be a new type. Any different taste about it?

We have them here in Switzerland from many years, I even grew them in my garden using the seeds of those I bought. They are NOT a Canadian invention. Kumato is a trade name given to a patented cultivar of tomato developed in Spain (Europe).

@noni1959 Kumatos are good, but not so much different from other good tomatoes. I like tomatoes that have very few seeds and are not full of water.

@LadyDuck I'm wanting to experiment and try new varieties. I'm wondering where I can find stores that carry more selections.

@LadyDuck thank you for the information. I'll read something from a site and find out later it's part truth. They are a wonderful tomato and makes things taste so much better.

My daughter would love to try to grow brown tomatoes. I'm busy watching cherry tomatoes get bigger on a tomato plant right now.

@sallypup they are overgrowing at my son's house. Amazing and we can't keep up even giving many away. I make salsas, salads, burgers and more. Added many fresh to a stew and it's like they riped in hours.

That's so interesting. Thanks for the info. I wonder why you need a license to grow them?

@JudyEv If they want to commercialize the products, they cannot forbid people to keep the seeds of what they pay for.

I grow them without a license Judy. The seeds are not for sale, but you buy the product and keep the seeds and grow them.
