My grandmother used to buy picture books for me when I was still a kid. I didn't put much interest to it that time. My focus was more on the academic side than recreational. But it's unavoidable as time passed by. I eventually took some interest reading that kind of books and some of these books are still here with me. As for novels, I couldn't exactly remember the first novel I ever read but I remember reading one because it's a school requirement. We were required to write a reaction paper out of that novel so there's no option to skip doing it. Back then there's little to no access of online books so hardcopies were the only option we've got. I'm still not a constant reader after that. I'm not really into novels especially if it's a thick one. Well of course, unless it's mandatory. College came, I was skipping classes and eventually got hooked to the internet hustling some small writing jobs. I'm sure I've read a couple more novels but again, I couldn't remember the first of the many firsts that I've read. How about you, do you remember the first novel you ever read? If so, what was it?

An actual novel like “Great Expectations” by Charles Dickens? I don’t remember when I first read a “real” novel. Or maybe I’m thinking of novel in too strict of a sense.

I'm really no good at remembering things like this and hate making an effort to remember.

@piyoz000 If we’re talking about a regular book, I read “Charlotte’s Web” when I was five years old. But that book doesn’t really say novel to me.

Charlotte's Web is something I heard about in movie form but now I totally forgot all about it.

No, I can't remember. I started reading at 4 years old. I still remember a lot of the books I read when I was younger, though.

Oh now I just remembered reading these tiny, picture books that came out as freebies from our old-time favorite powdered milk. These books would still exist if termites didn't eat them

They were mostly about fairy tales and maybe they still exist somewhere. I'll try to do some research on it next time.

@piyoz000 Well, that's interesting. I wonder if any of those books still exist in a library somewhere?

I started reading when I was in Preparatory days. My mom always buys that comic magazine called Liwayway weekly. I have fun reading it because it is Tagalog and ABC is easy there. Same with my youngest daughter. Like my mom, I buy this magazine on a weekly basis and my daughter wants to read with me until she was well-versed with the letters and alphabets. She was 4 years old when she started to read.

@piyoz000 They still exist now but in a newer version. I like the old ones better.

I heard about Liwayway but I couldn't remember reading one. It's sad that magazines like these don't exist anymore.

Nancy Drew novels. That's where I started. And I enjoyed each of the Nancy Drew series,

I believe the first novel I read was called "Paradise Alley" which was a book about three brothers who lived in poverty in New York City that entered the world of professional wrestling in an attempt to get out of poverty but they were not successful.

This book has no movie version yet? I find the story interesting based from what you just said. I still prefer the original version but if it's from a book, I don't have the time to read that long anymore.

Oh, that sounds cool! I still might watch it despite the ratings.

@piyoz000 "Paradise Alley" became a movie that was released in 1978 since it was the first film Sylvester Stallone directed.

If you can consider Nancy Drew a novel, then that's probably the first that I've read.
