The Deluge...or Singing in the Rain

Wednesday was an interesting day, to say the least. It was a super hot day, even by Florida standards, and my daughter and I were at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The week prior to that, we had a low pressure system stall over north Florida that dumped copious amounts of rain for a solid week. Non-stop rain that caused widespread flooding. But this week, well it was a whole lot different. The rains went away and the sun came out. And it came out with a vengeance. No rain in sight for the entire week and temperatures pushing towards 100. So we knew we were in for a hot one at Disney, but prepared well for it (lots of water, cooling towels, mist fans, hats, sunscreen, etc). And zero percent chance of rain.
So, to back up a little bit. My daughter and I are annual pass holders at Disney World, which means we can go as often as we want. Our goal this year is to go on every holiday, and at least once every month, and so far we are well above our goal in attendance. On top of that, every now and then Disney does special events that are not included in our passes, and so tickets must be purchased for these events. Once such event, Disney After-Hours, was held this past Wednesday. That's when one select theme park stays open super late at night. This month it was Disney's Hollywood Studios. My daughter and I bought tickets, and decided that since we're pass holders we'd just plan to stay a couple of days. So we went down Wednesday morning and spent the day at Epcot, before heading to the after-hours event at 7pm at Hollywood Studios. And sure enough, the forecast heat was as bad as they said it would be. We were miserably hot.
But then something weird happened right around 8pm. As you can see from the photo, some weird cloud formation started developing right over the theme parks. It sat there and just kept building up and building up. And next thing you know, all hell breaks loose and the fury of the gods were unleashed on us. Thunder and lightning and torrential rain of heavenly proportions (or would that be hell?) descended upon us. The lightning was so bad that almost all of the rides shut down due to power surges, power outages, or technical glitches.
One of the greatest things about specially-ticketed events at Disney is that they limit considerably the amount of guests that can attend. So there was hardly anyone at the theme park before the storm started, but after about an hour of hurricane-like rain, what few people were left cleared out of the park. I thought the crowds were light before the rain, it was even better once the storm started.
The storm just sat there and continued to build and dump rain on us. It just didn't move or drift or anything. It rained for a solid 5 hours, from 8pm to 1am. Eventually the lightning tapered off and all the rides opened back up, so my daughter and I decided to have all the fun we could, even in the pouring rain. We were soaked to the bone, but we didn't care. We had a blast!
And to top it all off, Disney actually offered refunds or credit to all the guests who had bought tickets for the after-hours event. Disney never does that, so it shows just how bad this storm was. Since we had planned on attending another after-hours event at the end of the summer, we chose the credit. So now our next after-hours event is already paid for.
It's been decades since I last played in the rain (I've played numerous paintball tournaments in the rain, but that's work and not play). I felt like a little kid again, running around in the pouring rain, clothes and shoes thoroughly soaked, and splashing in puddles of water all around me. It was incredibly gratifying, and I had the time of my life. As my daughter said, we might as well make the best of a bad situation. I guarantee this trip will probably remain a top-5 in my favorite Disney memories.
Have you ever got caught in the rain as an adult, and just said to hell with it I'm going to just have fun? I think we should all do it at least once or twice in our lives.

Look at those mammatus clouds!!!
Oh, yes, I’ve been soaked to the bone a few times….usually related to an outdoor concert.

@moffittjc — JUST rain is fine. Lightning and wind? No thanks.

@FourWalls I agree. I can handle a little rain. It’s the lightning that scares me.

In all my years of attending festivals and outdoor concerts, I've never been rained on once. I would think that would be incredibly fun, as long as they show didn't have to be postponed or cancelled!

@moffittjc I think it is dangerous to run outside rides in the midst of a storm like that. I'm so glad you and your daughter had fun even when soaked to the bone. I have been on rides that got stuck but we did not have to evacuate. I guess I haven't really lived.

The outdoor rides (I.e. roller coasters) will shut down if there is lightning, but all the other rides will stay open unless there are power surges or power outages. All the new rides are so technologically advance and depend so heavily on computer programs to run them, that even the slightest glitch will often shut down a ride. It's not uncommon nowadays to have to get "evacuated" off a ride that shuts down due to technical problems. You'd think most people would be upset when that happens, but it's become a trendy thing at Disney now where it is considered an honor and privilege to have to get "evacuated" off a ride.
The only ride that was shut down almost the entire night was the Slinky Dog roller coaster, but they eventually opened it back up around 1:30am (the event ended at 2am). I'm surprised that they even bothered, since it rained the entire night and pretty much everybody left the park. But good old Disney went above and beyond and got the roller coaster back open right before closing time!

@akalinus Disney is very cautious when it comes to weather, but I've seen other theme parks keep operating their outdoor rides even when lightning was crashing down all around them.

Just the other week, I did while out playing Pokemon go. At least the rain wasn't so bad that It blinded me more than I already am. So, I finished what I started before going home. At least I didn't have to call my husband to rescue me.

Sweet! How far away from home were you? And were you walking, or driving?

@moffittjc Well, about a mile or half mile. And rolling if you want to be literal about it. I'm in a wheelchair and can't walk long distances.

Made things more fun didn’t it? I can’t stand the heat. I’d rather have the rain though I wouldn’t wanna get caught in a heavy downpour if I were out and about.

I was so hot that the freezing cold rain felt amazing…at first. But after a good drenching I was shivering I was so cold.

@lovebuglena I would rather be shivering cold than melting hot! And surprisingly, the shops at Disney still had lots of hoodies, sweatshirts and jackets for sale.

I wouldn’t have cared either way, but it was nice that Disney offered it. Even if I didn’t get a refund, I still felt like I got my money’s worth out of the experience.

Wow what a fun time you had playing on the rain. And to be at Disney when this happened. How cool Jeff. And a stunning photo. That is one way to enjoy Disney without the crowds.
I got soaked a couple of times at concerts and it made it that much more enjoyable and memorable.

The same thing happened this week when we went to Disney for the 4th of July. We got dumped on by monsoon rains again. But thankfully everything cleared up right in time for the fireworks.

@CarolDM Thankfully your rain let up in time for fireworks. Right before Covid hit, we had two years in a row where fireworks had to be cancelled due to severe thunderstorms.

Weather is so weird, and I really like those cloud pictures. No playing in the rain memories stand out, but I am the type I would have done it. I do not use umbrellas, why bother? Rain is just water.

I'm like you, I never use an umbrella. I do have a rain jacket/windbreaker, but even that I hardly ever wear. Like you said, rain is nothing more than water. I'm not going to melt if I get wet.

I seriously recommend it. I'm normally more cautious (or reserved) when it comes to things like getting caught out in the rain, but for some reason I just felt compelled to leave the comfort of shelter and run out and play in the rain. It was so gratifying and fun. Just what I needed in my little mini-vacation.

I'm glad you had such a good time. I would not have enjoyed being soaked to the skin. I didn't realize that you had to buy MORE tickets for special events. You guys are true, dyed-in-the-wool Disney fans. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

I think it’s ridiculous that pass holders have to buy tickets to special events. It should be included in with our passes. But Disney always finds a way to squeeze extra money out of everyone, including pass holders! Thankfully, there’s only a few special events that require separate tickets.
