Covid lockdown seems like a dream

Last week at a social event I was chatting to someone who had been a student in 2020, and we were talking about our experiences during Covid lockdown. She was lucky I guess in that 2020/21 was her final year, so she had already made friends and had some fun and now the lockdown meant that she stayed in and concentrated on her work, which had certain benefits. Obviously the situation was much worse for people just starting a course and being cloistered away unable to meet their contemporaries or their tutors, with no chance to make the most of all the opportunities to try new things that university usually offers along with the educational aspects. But the funny thing about this conversation was that talking to her brought back memories of lockdown that I had already pretty much wiped from my mind! Only being allowed out once a day for some sort of exercise, staying 2 metres away from other people, household bubbles… I had almost forgotten about arranging video calls for the girls to chat to their friends, walking across the playing field to shout a few words through their open window to friends who lived nearby, everyone scrambling to figure out how to use Zoom and Google classroom and WhatsApp. But the biggest thing I had completely forgotten about was the Zoom ceilidhs! We regularly go to the ceilidhs that are held in the village every month from September to April. During lockdown of course all that was banned, but the enterprising organisers arranged for them to be moved onto Zoom instead, and the callers managed to create dances that could be danced by just one person (maybe with a broom or something) or by two or more in a household, while live musicians would be streamed performing in their homes. Of course they were just a pale imitation of the ‘real thing’ but at least it was a bit of fun (and, importantly, a bit of income for the musicians too) and we were able to see other people and participate in a group activity. My partner wasn’t that keen and after the first couple of times he bowed out, but the girls and I did continue to push the sofas back and gallop up and down the living room each month! I remember at the time some people predicted that life would never be the same, that people would avoid communal activities and that hugging would go out of fashion. Well not surprisingly none of that was true, and we are all happy to be getting together for real-life dances and hugging our friends, perhaps even more than before now that we realise how important it is! And I think my brain has just filed all those experiences away at the back somewhere as not necessary to think about most of the time! Has your life returned to normal? @fleura We’ve made the conscious decision to perpetuate one lockdown practice foisted on us - we no longer pass the collection plate in Church, but leave it near the door (with a close eye kept on it) and those who wish to contribute do.

Have you noticed a change in revenue as a result?

Life was the same before and after covid. I still have to work 6 days a week. Go to office every single day. Brace myself with possible covid peoples. No difference to me

My life has pretty much returned to normal, although I wasn’t completely cut off from everyone. My dad, his wife, and one of my friends, Naomi, weren’t going to let me be alone, so I still saw and hugged them. Naomi is a nurse, and I was like, well, if she’s okay with it, shouldn’t I be? Mostly though, it was just my dad and his wife. I dutifully wore my mask everywhere, and stayed six feet away from people in public. But, by the time the mask rule was lifted, I admit I was close to a panic attack with those things. I really appreciate each and every hug now, like you said. I DO have a friend who has NOT returned to normal, who is also a nurse. She was a germaphobe then, and she is worse now. Despite proof that wearing two masks on top of each other makes no difference, she continues to wear two masks at all times, unless she is eating. When she is eating at a restaurant with me, she keeps one mask on in between bites. As she lives with her younger brother, she wears her mask around him too, until she goes to bed at night, and takes both masks off, finally. She’ll hug me, but only if I wear a mask while doing it. That is literally, the only reason why I still have one, in my car, ready for whenever we meet up. In addition, she is also why I am vaccinated. She refused to see anyone outside of work unless they were inoculated first. My friends, both nurses, responded in very different ways. Good lord, I’m sorry I talked your leg off.

@Fleura I can’t believe she’s been doing it for three years. How on earth does she breathe? And let me tell you, it is hard to understand a word she says.

Gosh, your second friend does seem to be rather over-cautious, but I guess if that makes her comfortable... It can't be easy for her though, behaving that way all the time. There are a few people I know who still wear masks in busy places, but not to that extent!

What's normal? Food prices doubling? Unavailability of tapioca pudding cups? Peeing in parking lots or behind bushes because public washrooms haven't reopened? (Actually, most have reopened, and the ones that haven't, haven't because the venue hasn't reopened.)

Well... food prices fluctuating is pretty normal really, in the long term. And what's a tapioca pudding cup?

Our lives weren't affected all that much. We cut back our eating out at restaurants and had some virtual doctors' appointments and kept away from crowds. We're pretty much back to normal now. Interesting about the dancing via Zoom. Enjoy your day.

Yes, things were very different to the way they would have been if the pandemic had occurred even ten years earlier, with all the technology available!

Yes, during that time my grandson was in chemo, and we needed to keep him away from other children, so my daughter and I didn't go many places anyway.

NO, we have not returned to normal. We do not go out for lunch and dinner anymore and if I see a crowded shop I wear my mask. Covid is still here, I know from our doctor.
