Good Deed for the Day

At Aldi's (grocery store), you need a quarter to "rent" a shopping cart, in which you will get back once the shopping cart is returned.
I didn't have a cart, but I was almost finished being rung up for my few items.
This feeble, little elderly lady came in and shouted if she could use THIS shopping cart by a register. My cashier said no, my associate needs to use that one.
So the elderly lady asked if she could take THAT one. Again, the cashier said no and that she needed that one. The lady sighed "Oh, ok . . . well I'll have to try shopping somehow . . . " and shuffled towards the aisles.
I thought that was so not cool of the cashier . Finishing the transaction, I got my change for the groceries . . . I had a quarter .
My son carried the groceries and I ran outside. The quarter went in for the shopping cart, but the chains were a bit stuck . . . now I saw why the elderly lady had trouble. I figured it out and ran back inside with the cart.
I found her. She was so surprised . She offered me a quarter for it, but I really didn't need it - I was just glad to help .
Do you have a good deed for the day/week story?

Not one that I did but a cashier helped Pretty and I in Aldi once. I try to guesstimate how much we'll need for shopping there and just take cash with us. At the time I didn't own credit or debit cards, just a checkbook. We still needed $15. Pretty asked me if I was sure I didn't have more money and I told her we have plenty of money in the checkbook but they won't take checks in Aldi. I asked the cashier if she could just push us to the side and I'd go next door to Walmart and bring back cash for her. She told us she hadn't done her good deed for the day and paid the rest of the bill.
When I went back later, she wouldn't accept payment from me for that transaction. I asked if she'd hang onto the money for somebody else that came up short and let them have it. She thought about that and agreed to pay it forward for me. She was a very nice cashier... We haven't seen her in that Aldi since then. I hope she's still doing well.

@DaddyEvil I personally have never seen that kind of generosity by a cashier, so yah, you guys were quite lucky! And how kind of you too to do that for the Walmart customers!

Wow, that was really generous of that cashier! And honorable of you to go back to repay her. I think the paying it forward was a good idea too. How wonderful if the world worked together like this all the time . . . people have gotten so selfish and stingy. Young folks have no manners sometimes and aren't particularly helpful these days. Great cashiers are hard to come by . . . I hope she is doing well too!

@much2say I thought we'd been lucky that she was our cashier. I don't know anyone else who would have been that generous. (While I was still at Walmart, I'd often chip in a little bit if someone came up short but I wouldn't have given away more than two or three dollars. I couldn't afford to do more than that. I usually only carried around $2 on me unless Pretty and I were shopping.)

That was so sweet of you, and I am glad to hear you did that for her. The cashier really should have thought twice before she told the poor lady no.
I gave two teenage girls a ride to Walmart. They knocked on my door, and I didn't know them, but apparently they were visiting their dad for the weekend. I was very happy they didn't try to rob me.

I just could not believe that cashier reacted like that . . . what happened to helping the elderly . . . what happened to real customer service???
Oh wow, that was really nice of you! I couldn't do that here . . . it's so sad we have to feel suspicious of anyone here.

@much2say I'll admit, I was very suspicious, and I felt bad about it. I live in Section 8, and unfortunately, that warrants suspicion. I say that as a person who has been on section 8 for 17 years. I kept my purse away from their reach, and even relaxed until one said I looked like I was in my twenties. I am 42, and do not look like I am in my twenties. So that REALLY put me on alert. If they had been teenage boys I flat out would have said no.

Aww that was so nice of you. Many times I’ve gone and not had a quarter and people have offered me their carts or I’ve found one. Even cashiers have allowed me to take a cart when I needed change and then just told me to bring it back after.

What you did for the elderly lady warms my heart ! The cashier was too mean to the elderly lady and I think she didn't allow the lady to use the shopping carts on purpose !

@changjiangzhibin89 The sad part is I don't even think the cashier noticed. This is how oblivious the younger generation can be - it seems manners have disappeared .

@much2say Some stores only pay lip service to customer service ! That cashier was so indifferent to the poor old lady ! Don't know if she felt shame-wanted to look for a hole to crawl into-when she saw you giving the old lady shopping cart.

I think the casher/checker was more concerned about what was convenient for herself. She had a line, but all she had to do was run a cart to the lady and get another cart (many which were behind her). I would think all would understand? The manners of this younger generation is sometimes appalling.

Kudos to you for helping the old lady. Enjoy your day. I'm past the age of doing good deeds. I hope others do good deeds for me!

Those locking mechanisms can get tricky. Often there are quarters left in a cart when I get there, but if not, I do not mind. My good deed that did not get completed was someone asked on a share group if she could get some help with food, due to some unforeseen circumstances. I messaged her and offered, but she never got back to me. I do not know her, nor she me and then if you are not connected sometimes you miss those FB messages. I really would have been glad to help her though.

That was really helpful. I often don't think quickly enough how to do those simple helpful things.
I'm an old lady and sometimes it is hard to get those carts out.
We have to put a loonie ($1 coin) in to get a cart.
If I find a loose cart, I always leave it loose at the end for someone else.

I don't ever think of you as an old lady!!
Wow - a $1 coin - I somehow think people here would get upset about that. Now that I think of it we hardly ever see $1 - let alone a half dollar coin.
There's usually a cart exchange before I even make it back to the cart return area . . . most of the time people will have a quarter ready to give you - some just say thanks and take the cart.

That was nice of you. It's the small offerings of kindness that really make the difference. I haven't any good deed stories for this week but you never know.

So often when I am at Aldi, someone will just give me a cart while I am on my way to the cart rack with my quarter, and they don't want a quarter. So I always pay it forward. There was a young man behind me at Aldi one day, but he had no groceries, I unloaded mine on the belt for the cashier, and he just stood there. I said, he could go first, ahead of me, but he wouldn't. He said all he needed was a quarter, and all the cash he had was dimes and nickels. I gave him a quarter so he wouldn't have to wait...and he insisted on giving me the 2 dimes and a nickel. I had such a huge order that day, I couldn't imagine making him wait for a quarter.
