Who is the most recognizable person in your country?

I was watching a sports show the other day, and the two guys talking were arguing over who was more recognizable: Lebron James or Lionel Messi. They both agreed Messi was more famous, because soccer (football to everyone but Americans) is the most popular sport in the world. However, one host said because of looks, NBA star Lebron James was going to be more noticeable in public than Messi, while the other insisted Messi would be more noticeable. Which brings me to ask, who is the most recognizable person in your country? Is it your country’s leader? If Lebron James and Joe Biden went out, alone, with no security, I still think more Americans would notice the basketball star over the President of the United States. So, what is your answer? If not your president/prime minister/king, is the most recognizable an actor, sports figure, or even criminal? Please, share your opinion.

I would say the most recognizable person today due to the release of his latest motion picture called "Mission Impossible Day Of Reckoning Part 1" is Tom Cruise since the only celebrity who has been successful in making a motion picture that has been a box office hit outside of playing a character in a hero franchise.

Sometimes I think of his biggest years being behind him, but if the box office is to be believed, they really aren’t.

@snowy22315 I didn’t think so either, but then I also thought about the people who don’t pay attention to politicians. Americans know our own President, but I was watching a game show from last year, and the clue was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (which he was at the time). The two American contestants couldn’t name Boris Johnson! If Americans are like that, would citizens of other countries be that way with our President? America tends to make more news, but it made me wonder.

I had to look up Lebron, I'd never heard of him before. I think Biden would be more noticeable because many people don't watch any kind of sports.

@rebelann No, I didn’t say anything in the discussion, I mentioned them in my first response to you, but I put a space between paragraphs, so it would be easy to miss that part. I had asked if you were the person who really liked Golden Girls. I saw something I thought you’d like, but then I thought, oh, maybe it wasn’t her that liked them so much.

Yeah, I was counting on commercials and movies to inform non sports fans. I'm glad to know you had to look him up, because that reinforces my belief Michael Jordan is more well known. Unless, you have heard of Jordan, right? This is going to sound weird, so pardon me, but are you the who told me that you were a huge Golden Girls fan? Or was that someone else?

I don't watch any sports so wouldn't recognize a sports star. I might recognize Obama if I saw him in public but wouldn't recognize Biden. I've only seen him a couple of times. Unfortunately, I'm sure I'd recognize Trump, even if I wouldn't want to know it's him.

I am not sure. I would say that Anne Murray is a very recognizeable person from Canada as well as Shania Twain and Celine Dion. Michael J Fox and Wayne 'the great one' Gretzky come to mind as well as Alex Trebek. The name Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone, was also a Canadian, he was from Brantford, which is about 90 minutes from where we live.

I was basing my assessment on the amount of commercials and movies sports figures are in. For instance, I don’t watch tennis, but I know who Serena Williams is. After having read a couple American Mylotters say they wouldn’t recognize Joe Biden’s face if they saw him, I can say I’m still not sure of the answer to my question.

In India the common man recognizes an actor more easily than a politician. Of course now our Indian prime minister is recognizable more to the public for his strange policies.

Michael Jordan is looking a little puffy with middle age. But he would have been one of the most recognizable humans in the US a few years ago. Donald Trump is a bad bad man, but I think many Americans would recognize him in an airport. Hmm. James McMurtry, my favorite living songwriter? No. Lebron is probably pretty tall. We tend to notice really tall people and give them a second look. I'd probably recognize him before some stumbling old guy, even if the stumbling old guy was our President. I think I recognized that famous (British?) soccer player in an airport. His wife (a Spice Girl?) smiled at me because I was playing my mandolin instead of reading. I'm trying to think of others. ..

It's kind of interesting, because I think people who follow politics and people who follow sports don't overlap to a GREAT extent. However, you can follow some kind of sport but not another. Any basketball fan would know Lebron for sure, and most Americans would know Lebron, but worldwide, Biden would be better-known; however, you're right--maybe just walking around, people wouldn't realize it was even him. Our MOST recognizable person would probably be an entertainer, like Tom Cruise or Beyonce.

Why I think Lebron would be better recognized is because even if you don’t follow sports, you’ve probably seen a commercial with him in it. I’ve never seen a soccer game, and the sports shows I watch don’t cover soccer, but because of commercials and a few movies, I know who David Beckham and Lionel Messi are. But you mention Beyoncé, and that’s a great choice! Even if you know nothing about music, you might just know who she is! I thought perhaps as he aged Tom Cruise might be less recognized, but you are undoubtedly right about him too!
