The American Dream

During my younger years, I used to have this American dream. That is why I took a major in Physical Therapy because I wanted to live and earn a living in the US. However, this lifelong goal changed. It changed its course when I realized that this was not my dream life. I need to be with my immediate family in my country. Traveling in the US will be fine for me, but I will not live there for good. Despite having this disposition, most of my relatives in Los Angeles, California, keep encouraging me to pursue my childhood American dream. Have you achieved any lifelong goals or dreams? You wanted to live in LA? Even with relatives there I would want to leave as soon as possible. I've heard its huge and polluted. Working in physical therapy sounds interesting.

I used to want to be with them before. Then I lost interest because they just gave me false hope a couple of times. You are right that it is best not to be with them. Being a Physical Therapist is a great job, but I need to stop for personal reasons.

I know a lot of people here in the Philippines have American dream and they based their success in life if they are successful working and living in the US. I would love to live in Canada

@Shavkat I prefer Canada over the US. I have cousin in London and that is a good place too

I am seeing my batchmates in the US and have not seen how successful they are at present. One of the reasons why I dropped the idea of reaching my American dream is wanted to live in Canada. I do think that it is a good place to live comfortably.

Good thing that you followed what your heart. Although you were not able to fulfill your "American Dream" But I think you wouldn't be happy if you forced yourself into it.

@Shavkat That is true you will absorb their culture over time and may be a bit different.

I would not be the same person if I pushed myself to have this American dream. I can see some of my batchmates in the US and they seem so indifferent as compared before. They had changed in any ways for living overseas.

I think you did what you needed to do, and that’s wonderful. My lifelong dream was simply to be happy, and to my amazement, I’m halfway there.

I think I am. I am a bit shallow when it comes to having true happiness. I just want to be financially stable and be with my loved ones as I reach the retirement age. I am glad that you are halfway there now.

You could always move your brother and sisters to the US with you. I have a Filipino friend who dreams about moving to the US and joining the military... I don't know if he'll achieve his dream or not. Either way, I'll always encourage him to do what he really wants.

I wish that it is easy to get the US visa. At this point, I do not have enough time to accomplish all the requirements needed before working there. Unless, someone will invite and accommodate me for a visit.

@Shavkat I would invite you for a visit but I can't. I know the person that invites must show they can support another person while the person is here and I can't do that right now.

It would be hard to leave your family. Our son lives permanently in Ireland and can't visit very often. We're now getting too old to go back there and he sometimes regrets that he ever left Australia. But the feeling doesn't last too long. He has a fulfilling life there.

It is also what I think about leaving my immediate family. Although I can bring them if got the US visa and the like. But then, I felt that they will not want this option, especially my biological parents. I can relate that the genuine feelings will always there despite the long distance situation.

We stayed in Los Angeles 4 months in the past for my husband business. Nice place, but I could not wait to be back home. I achieved my lifelong dream, coming to live in this area in Switzerland.
