A gift for newborn baby

July 28, 2023 7:12pm CST
My cousin just gave birth to a baby girl. She is so cuteeee I want to buy her a gift, but I'm not sure what to get. Should I get diapers, a blanket, a toy, or clothes? If only I were a little richer :'(

@sharonelton Oh, a rattle and teether? I might get one for her when she's a bit older. For now, I've decided to get her a pacifier and a blanket. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Yeah, if only I were a little richer, I could buy more things for her. But for now, I've bought a pacifier, a blanket, and diapers. I'd like to buy a stroller, but it is a little out of my price range.

I think diapers should be useful at this point of life. Babies are not fussy. You can get them anything.

@terramars Well that is more than enough. It is the thought that counts.

I've already bought a pacifier and a blanket, but I may also add diapers. If only I were a little richer, I would buy all the baby gear for her.

It's the thought that counts, as they say and I'm sure anything you buy will be appreciated by the new parents.

As a mom and a grandmother, my advice on baby gifts is please don’t buy clothing for a newborn baby. They outgrow it in a very few weeks! If you decide on clothing, pick a bigger size according to what season it is appropriate for. The mama will be very happy! I make blankets so that’s usually what I give. Also, a small gift certificate for a meal or better yet, a handmade card that says you will prepare and drop off a meal when mom and baby get home. That is the best gift ever, as everyone is tired and we all have to eat! Welcome to mylot. I hope you enjoy your time here.

@terramars This is a good place to visit with others, learn about other people's way of living, and just basically making friends and getting ideas for life in general. I do remember getting meals from friends after coming home with a new baby. It was more helpful than anything else. There was always enough in one delivered meal for two dinners, I really did appreciate it. When I make that for others, people say it's just what they needed--I think it's more important than the gifts, and really, it is a gift.

@MarieCoyle So true! It's also a reminder that even the smallest gestures can make a big difference. Thank you again for your thoughtful idea.

Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate your insights as a mom and a grandmother. A handmade blanket or a gift certificate for a meal are both great ideas. I will definitely keep those in mind. I also like the idea of offering to cook a meal for them. That is a very thoughtful gesture and it would be a great way to help them out. And, thank you again for your warm welcome. I have been enjoying my time here so far, meeting new people and talking with them. I'm excited to explore MyLot and learn more about the community.

First, I would like to welcome you to Mylot. I hope you enjoy your time here, and that you get to know so many of the great people here. Diapers are always a great choice because they are constantly needed, and often expensive. Sometimes, it’s fun to get creative; I bought a personalized pacifier for my cousin’s baby once, and added things like teething gel in the gift too. For my sister, I bought a baby outfit for my niece that was from my brother-in-law’s favorite sports team. So many things are needed that I imagine your cousin will appreciate it all.

I've asked her a few times, but she always says she doesn't need anything and I shouldn't bother. She just wants me to be the godmother of her baby.

I'm seeing her next Sunday. She's still in the hospital. The doctor doesn't want my cousin and her baby to go home yet. So excited to see that little bundle of joy!

Congratulations We had 3 young couples have babies with in a couple weeks of one another a couple years ago. I asked each what they needed for their babies and all said diapers and wipes. So I got them each that and a outfit from Walmart. They have some cute ones under $10.

Hi! Just read your comment. I've asked my cousin what she needs, but she says she doesn't need anything and I shouldn't bother. But stil, I want to give her baby some gifts. I'll probably look on Walmart next time. I'm sure I can find something nice at a good price. Thankyouuu

Perhaps it is better to ask her parents what they want? Then it may be suitable for them much more. Or giving them some coupons and they can buy something they need for this little baby girl?

Hmm I hadn't thought of that. Coupons are a great way to let them choose what they need. I'll consider it. Thank you for your suggestion.
