Learning Something Unpleasant About Your Food

I was reading an article on Yahoo this past week, and it was a story about gross things you might not know about your food. One, was about store bought, sliced loaves of bread. I won’t share it to avoid ruining anyone’s sandwich they are having for lunch (some of you may already know what it is). It basically explains why a loaf of bread in a store lasts longer than the bread you make at home. You might want to invest in a bread maker. Or you might not want to, as you’ve been eating store bought bread for a long time, and you have been perfectly fine. I had a sandwich for lunch, even knowing what my bread has in it. It’s different to me when it’s something like the artificial sweetener, aspartame. Since it is labeled a carcinogen, I’m going to try to avoid ingesting it (not saying a Diet Coke is going to give you cancer, don’t get me wrong). So, can you find out something gross about your food, and it not bother you? Pretty much all of our food has something; from a pesticide on fruit to bugs in ketchup (that isn’t new news & I’ve seen Mylotters mention it). What do you think?

Most of the food that we eat is fake or it's banned everywhere but here. Like when it comes to meat, they ground it up and then place it together in strips...(steak and such)

It is quite funny things in Europe that wouldn’t be touched are consumed heavily here. Companies are like, feed it to Americans; they’ll allow them to eat anything!

@hillhjill I cannot fathom eating lab meat, but yet people will, and claim it is safe even though it is way too soon to know long term effects.

Most of the months of the year I have made bread in some form or other. You have reminded me to put it on the top of my list. Thanks.

@AmbiePam That's kind of funny. I wish poor folks could have the opportunities that my family did when daughter was young.

I am not the healthiest of people but the fake sweeter stuff gets me every time. I feel diabetic if I even know what that feels like. I just feel off and dizzy. I stay away from all their fake sugar's , but its so much more healthy than real sugar. My body says otherwise and I put a lot of bad things in my body and never has that reaction.

A certain percentage of bugs are allowed grounded up in food. I read that a long time ago.

Yes, exactly. Bugs aren’t the problem with the bread though.

I think what surprised me was that it wasn't something you normally see purposely added. This was something they did intentionally to the bread, and I had no idea.

I have never been a big bread eater. Bread does not like me, if you catch my drift. Yes, I can find a lot of things gross about food here, especially processed food, but what "they" do to many natural foods doesn't help either.

@AmbiePam I wasn't given anything I could not handle - well, except my sweet tooth. That is sometimes hard to handle. But, I do try my best to stick with all-natural foods because of my food allergies and sensitivities.

Some pesticides are systemic and some contact. While contact pesticides can be got rid of by washing the ones that are systemic remain in the vegetables and fruits for almost 8 days . Farmers are expected to harvest them only after 8 days they are sprayed on but I do not think they follow that rule.

I like to make our own food, I trust that for the most part. Otherwise, I feel like we have to pick our battles, and eating is a necessary battle that we have to come to terms with. Noth that I would run out and start eating things that I have banished from my diet, such as pork, in the past number of years.

I didn't realize that aspartame was a carcinogen although I knew it was bad for us. Recently I received why nitrates are bad and they are also carcinogens. So, I'm watching for meats cured naturally instead. I actually found a pepperoni without nitrates and it's priced about the same. Years ago someone shared about a yogurt I was eating at the time that was thickened with tilapia. I thought that was gross and couldn't eat that any more. I'm fact I wrote a blog article about that very thing.

Hi, Marsha! It’s so good to see you! Yes, I remember as a teenager my mom told me aspartame could also cause dementia. That was enough for me to say no thank you as dementia runs in my family anyway. I didn’t even realize you could get pepperoni without nitrates, so that’s pretty cool!

@AmbiePam It's not labeled as pepperoni but rather chorizo, but it tastes the same. My sister has the beginning of Alzheimer's/dementia and was told to get sugar out of her diet. That's been a hard change for her. It also runs in my family. Thankfully I pretty much gave up sugar when I began my keto journey five years ago. Now I have to get ready for church and work after that. But maybe I'll come visit a little bit again.

If I worried too much about stuff like that, I would probably starve being a picky eater. And even if the artificial sweeteners are "bad" for us...I will never give up my zero sugar coke/pepsi. Bugs in ketchup? EWW! But as long as I don't see or taste them...lol

I did wonder why my homemade bread went stale a lot sooner than shop brought bread, I thought I was making it wrong.

No, you just didn’t finish off your bread with anything gross (but safe). Plus, I bet your bread tasted a lot better.

I guess unless I get sick, I am not going to spend too much time thinking about it honestly. I have real stuff to worry about honestly, and don't need to add to the list.

Unscrupulous persons care a hoot for others health, sadly. Preservation of fruit and vegetables entails harmful ingredients generally. And not to forget the pesticide content

It's much better than it was in the 1920s or 30s. Read the Jungle by Upton Sinclair. You will be glad that you live in the 21st century. I'm going to try to stop drinking Classic Diet Coke Caffeine Free. I'm going to try to get back to drinking Diet Rite Cola which has sucralose. Diet Rite also comes in other flavors. It seems that everything you eat or drink has something wrong with it. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

My concern is about the cooking oil. Apart from whatever you have mentioned above, in our local packaged food industry, palm oil is used extensively, which is highly harmful for health. I want to tell all those people that, please use good quality oil, even if it costs a little more. Don't compromise with our health.

As you should be. We’ve all been fine eating it, and there is nothing dangerous in it. There is just something unseemly in it. Which isn’t a big deal in the long run because you can’t taste anything other than tasty bread.

I've read similar articles, and it can be a little unsettling to think about what we're putting in our bodies. But, I think if we eat store-bought bread occasionally, it's probably not going to have a significant impact on our health. I guess. Maybe. And, if I find out something gross about my food, I'll take it into account, but I'm not going to let it ruin my enjoyment of food. Because I loveeee foods! I loveee eating
