New School Year

While most schools begin their new year in August, I don't start mine until September. When I was a kid, the new school year always started in September and that is how I operate my Christian school/homeschool cover. August is a part of a summer and I want my families to have that time to go to the beach, the lake or those last few days of swimming. Of course, here in Alabama, you can swim through part of October.
I usually start classes the day after Labor Day. Our first day is always a themed party. I did this back when my kids were home and I was homeschooling them. Now they are all grown, so I do this for my students. This year I am thinking about something different. Instead of having the party on a Tuesday school day, I am thinking about a family party the Sunday night before. We will grill out have games, learning activities, crafts, and then when it gets dark shoot fireworks. The them will be I LOVE AMERICA. It is sad to see that there are not many patriotic themed activities for kids. I guess I will have to come up with some ideas myself.

Kids don't begin the school year here until after the Labor Day long weekend. Usually the Tuesday after.
