200 pounds of sand

One of my mother-in-law's favorite expressions when someone was bothering her, was to tell them to go pound sand. I didn't pound any sand today, but I moved some. I estimate the total to have been about 200 pounds. The photos show the view of the driveway and sidewalk before and after. Where did this sand come from? Rain washed it out of my neighbor's yard, across my driveway, and onto my front sidewalk. It took me 45 minutes or so, using a broom, shovel, and wheelbarrow, to clean all the sand off the driveway and sidewalk. I filled the wheelbarrow four times and figure each load was about 50 pounds. It was a good workout. Too good, maybe. My right shoulder has been giving me fits since I finished. I hope the new neighbor who moved in will get some grass growing again on the lawn over there, or their whole yard might wind up washing down into mine. Have you ever had to deal with erosion problems on your land?

Not here but on our property Vince was often redirecting rain into various drainage ways.

I did some redirecting when we moved in 28+ years ago. There's not much I can do about the sand coming down from next door, though.

@JudyEv We've thought about having a retention wall installed on the uphill side of the driveway. The effort and work involved isn't something we could handle ourselves at this point and we'd rather not spend the large amount of money I'm sure it would cost.

@DWDavis No, I guess not. That sounds quite a problem.

Wow now that is some sand. Well I live in apartments and there is gravel in the front of mine and it keeps washing up to my door when it rains..keep sweeping it.

It looks like alot of sand. I always heard my hubby say go pound salt. Maybe that is the Canadian version of that saying.

I am glad we do not have to deal with erosion problems. To shovel sand is surely as hard as shoveling snow, take care of your shoulder.

My shoulder is much better today. It just needed some rest.

@LadyDuck Snow looks all light and fluffy, but we both know it can be wet and heavy. I remember from the time I lived in New Hampshire.

Oh, yes. We owned a house about 30 years ago that had a gully at the end of the back yard when we moved in. We built a brick wall in the gully to keep the gully wall on our side from eroding. The guy on the other side wasn't happy and threatened to sue us. When it was all said and done, we didn't have to change anything. Roughly to the middle of the gully was our property. Some neighbors are annoying.

WOW that is a lot of sand, Glad you were able to get rid of it and I sure hope those new neighbors will do something about no more sand getting on your side,

I'm hopeful they will. Working to clean up the yard was one of the first things they did. If they can get grass growing again, it will help a log.

Wow, you must have had lots of rain to cause that erosion. I know that my little town used to have flooding and I periodically find silty spots.

Lately, our rain usually comes as hard downpours that wash the loose top layer down the hill. A nice, slow, soaking rain is a rarity.

That was really hard work. Fortunately I don't have to deal with erosion at all.

The neighbor did not cry about wanting the sand back. People are strange.

The old neighbors didn't care, and the new neighbor just moved in. I met him yesterday. He seems pretty cool.

I was wondering why you had 200 pounds of sand!

Sand can be heavy, especially wet sand. If it happens again the neighbor should assist.
