Don't Feed Waterfowl Bread Please!

With the last bits of summer around and fall around the corner, I thought it was time to talk again about feeding waterfowl bread. The temptation when you're talking a walk around a pond is to feed the ducks, geese and swans from a loaf of bread or maybe some popcorn. Please don't do that!
* Bread doesn't have much nutritional value and will fill the birds' stomachs up so that they don't forage for the foods they normally would eat. This can lead to malnutrition.
* Uneaten bread in the water can cause a build-up of bad nutrients which will lead to more algae growing around water, more disease and more pests such as rats.
* Feeding bread contributes to water pollution.
* Feeding bread can fatten the waterfowl, making it harder for them to fly and avoid predators.
* It can cause angel wing which causes a wing joint to twist and be deformed. Even just a few days of eating bread can cause irreparable damage and make the bird unable to fly.
What SHOULD you feed ducks, geese and swans?
* Non-processed foods such as veggies, whole grains, berries, seeds, cracked corn or duck feed pellets. I saw some online that are made to float. Cut up salad greens, vegetable peels, grapes (cut into small pieces...waterfowl don't have teeth) are also good options. A bag of frozen peas, corn niblets and carrot pieces is a good solution.
* If what you choose does not float, it's a good idea to feed the waterfowl on the shore so as not to pollute the water.
* If you see a bird in distress or having trouble moving around, please contact your local wildlife specialist.
I hope this information is helpful to you.

@lindaohio I hate to see people feeding birds with inappropriate food. So damaging, but there’s no telling them.

Yes. Even if the waterfowl wouldn't be harmed by the bread, think of the water getting polluted with all that waste.

We have had water fowls visiting us and they only depend on what grows in our garden.
They also like to frolic in the bird bath. Waterfowls are loners.

One of our neighbors often throws bread onto our road. Sometimes matzo too.

@LindaOHio yep. On the road by their house. And birds seem to pick at it.

Excellent reminders for all about the bread. Not good for any birds. Good to see you. Hope all is well. Congrats on meeting @fourwalls.

The city where we used to live many people fed bread. We did before we knew better. There were people who would buy "chicken scratch" to feed them, though and I think that was a good choice.

Yes, that probably is a good choice.

People here, in the city, are used to give bread to birds, specially pigeons. The bigger birds eat it all and grow in numbers while the smaller birds disappear.

@LindaOHio Here the native birds are disappearing because of a foreign bird that only eats, poops and mates. They are beautiful, like small parakeets, but they are a pest.

That's a shame to hear that the small birds are disappearing.

It seems even among birds there is a "pecking order." I see it at my bird feeder all the time.

I have never tried feeding them bread. But that's because I don't see any wild ones around here. It's good to know that they shouldn't be fed bread though.

On behalf of all the Donalds, Daisys, Daffys, and Howards out there, thank you. I remember my grandmother saving stale bread to feed the domesticated ducks by the pond near her house. Her intentions weren't altruistic, though. She was fattening them up.

@LindaOHio They buy sandwiches, then they throw the leftovers to the ducks and the swans.

I did not know this but I can tell you that I and almost everyone in Latvia feeds ducks of which there are many mostly bread and nothing bad has happened even to the canal that runs through Riga and the ducks are thriving, Then again I am not an expert just telling you how it is, If I was still living in Latvia I would probably make people aware of this.

Is the canal running water? It's probably worse in a stagnant pond.
