Where do you get your favorite patterns?

When I crochet, I am always hunting for the perfect pattern. I guess I am hard to please because if it is easy enough for me to do (intermediate crocheter at least) then I generally don't care for the pattern. I don't like to make ordinary items. For instance, I can't stand those plain mittens where you crochet the two sides individually then sew them together. I haven't found many mitten patterns that I like. I have made the most adorable sheep mittens which I liked very much. That pattern happened to be in a magazine. I would really love to subscribe to a crocheting magazine that always has beautiful patterns. I am not into afghans much though. I like clothing items much more. Do you subscribe to a good crochet magazine or have a special source you love? Thanks in advance!

Being an avid crocheter, I have bought most of mine through the years and I own more magazines, pamphlets and books than you can imagine. Now, with the computer, there are many places you can get them free online. For example: www.michaels.com and www.bernat.com So many of the yarn companies have their own websites now with free patterns. The patterns are usually rated so that you know if they meet your skill level.
Also, check out Hobby Lobby and Moores if you have those craft stores in your area. They have free yarn pamphlets hanging on racks beside the yarn. They are provided by the yarn companies so that you buy their yarn to make the project. However, you are not required to buy their yarn or anything. Just pick up the free pamphlets. They are usually only one page with a photo of the project on the front and the instructions on the back. They are also rated by skill level. Have fun!

I have a feeling that I would love to look through all your patterns. Unfortunately, there isn't a Hobby Lobby here and A.C. Moores is quite aways from here too. I do sometimes get up that way though and perhaps I will get a chance to look. Most of the pamphlets I do see though aren't anything I am interested in crocheting. I think what I really need to do is learn to design my own patterns. Thanks so much for posting!

Try designing your own patterns! It isn't that hard. I have done it. Back in the 60s, when crocheted vests were really popular, I designed two solid crocheted skirts with matching open crocheted vests. I did one as a straight skirt and one was aline. One was blue and one was soft yellow. You can do it! Experiment and have fun!

I have considered designing my own patterns. I am hesitant to put a lot of work into something that might not turn out though. Of course, lots of times other people's patterns don't turn out too good for me either, lol. I have made some pretty nice things in the past also. My almost 8 yo dd, persists in wearing a cardigan I made her that is really too small for her now. I think I should make her a new one soon. Of course, my 10 yo dd will of course want me to make her something. It seems that is the way kids work. Hopefully, I will be inspired to either design something soon or adapt the patterns I have. Meanwhile I will be checking out the links posted. Thanks to all who have added to this discussion!

I've been crocheting for most of my life. My Mom taught me when I was 7 and I now am 36. I bore easily with afghans, even the more complex ones, but I still make them for friends who are expecting babies and I made a few lapgahns for my Mom when she was in a wheelchair. I LOVE to make stuffed animals now, the best patterns I've done thus far are the Winnie the Pooh series as all the pieces are crocheted in instead of being sewn in. I would take a picture of them, but my mother in law has persuaded me to give them to her, she thinks they are adorable. I got the pattern book at Michaels and I've seen them at WalMart also.

The Pooh bear series was fantastic to work on! I worked on them almost non-stop, it was like an addiction to me, I had to get them done as soon as possible so I could show them off. The only suggestions I would make about that series would be for the tigger make sure you stuff his neck really good because his head is heavy and if it's not strong enough his head will droop. My father in law suggested putting a stick of some sort inside. For the eeyore, use a latch-hook for the mane.
I have the care bear book too, I haven't done any of them yet though. They are put together differently, the arms, legs, etc are sewn together afterwards, whereas the pooh series they are crocheted/joined in. To me, at least when I do these crafts, it makes a huge difference in the finished product... mostly because I can't sew! :)

The pooh series does sound cute. You have reminded me that I have patterns for big care bears to make someday. Now that the kids are off to school, I could work on them. I may just have to get to work on that. I was wanting to make clothing items but this may work out to be even better. I wonder how long it would take me? Hmmm...

I love to crochet too, but always trying to find new patterns without paying a fortune for patterns as my family is on a tight budget. I do web searches and sometimes find crochet patterns another website to check out is www.lionbrand.com they usually have some patterns.

Thanks. I check there on occasion but haven't made anything from there yet. I know what you mean about paying a fortune. I have purchased whole books just because I liked one or two patterns. I shouldn't but am still willing to pay a premium for something really good. I just don't like all that much that I see. If I am going to spend a lot of time and they money for materials, I want it to be really cute. I will check there again since it has been awhile and they likely have new patterns to look at. Looking for patterns can be fun too. I do more of it than crocheting that is for sure.

I prefer making my own patterns. I just think one up as I go along. If you need help in that area I can give you some tips. Check out my pictures. All the crocheted items I have pics of I made and designed myself. There may be patterns out there like them but i did not use a pattern for any except the pattern I made. I subscribe to Crochet! magazine. It has a lot of cute patterns in it every month.

Thanks so much for your response. I will have to check into Crochet! magazine. I do think I would also enjoy designing my own patterns if I would just go ahead and try. Maybe if I start on something small and work my way up. Blankets and scarfs shouldn't be too hard but I am worried about sweaters and such. Any tipe you may have sure would be helpful. Thanks.

I've actually found two places online that have a variety of patterns of all different types of objects. I sometimes get them sent right to my in-box.
I've gotten great ideas from www.Michaels.com and subscribe to newsletters that talk about patterns. There are so many good patterns that I can't nearly touch the surface on them. They range from beginner to expert.
I've also found a site where you can get tips as well as links to other patterns. Some of the patterns are rather ordinary, but some are pretty good. It's www.officialguidetocrochet.com

Thanks for the response. I don't believe I have ever been to either of these online sites although I have extensively searched the net for patterns. I will definitely be checking to see what these sites have in the way of patterns. Thanks again!

I tend to just make up patterns as I go along. If you understand your wool and your basic stitches, and often working in a circular manner for item like hats and mittens, just work away until it looks right. Makes the whole process quite organic and intuitive, and generally a lot more fun than folowing a pattern.

the only thing I've ever done in crochet have been blankets made from wool unpicked from old jumpers. It kept me very busy as a child :-)
It was great fun, and it recycled clothes long before it became "the thing to do".
I enjoy cross-stich more now. However the reason I responded is because I do like to knit and some of my best patterns are very old and I find them in secondhand book stores & junk shops. Fashion does not change that much and with new colours in wool etc old patterns are easily spiced up and you can get them for almost nothing, infact some were given to me because "who else would want them...." lol

I LOVE www.crochetpatterncentral.com. She lists tons of free patterns - from clothing to blankets, toys, and accessories. It is the best crochet site around. I have had two of my patterns listed with her site.
I generally make baby blankets, but have thought about venturing into other things. I too like to make challenging projects though, and often my blankets are very complex (or at least appear that way!)
