The cost of housing in Canada is ridiculous!

My landlord puts the rent up every year. Normally I wouldn't have a problem with this as it was only allowed to be raised by 2% because of a rent cap. Recently, the province raised the rent cap from 2% to 5% of the monthly rent. Instead of my rent being raised $12, it will be raised by $45 on Feb 1st 2024!
This is totally absurd.

I’m sorry. My rent went up $20 this year, but the year before it went up $64, and I felt sick when I found that out. It doesn’t seem right that people can raise rent so much in one year. I would have thought a rent cap would have done better keeping the increase low.

Sorry your rent will be going up higher than it normally does. I see friends on Facebook who are looking to rent places around here but can't afford them. 2 bedroom apartments goes for about $1800/month. Sad times we are living in when people can't afford to rent. No wonder there are more and more people homeless in our small community

Sorry to hear that,I have rented an apartment many years before buying a house. My mood dropped down every time when the landlord told rent-rise to me.Can you move to another house with low rent,or you may negotiate with landlord, ask for less rent-rise,otherwise you will move to another house.

@RubyHawk ,Sorry about that situation,we can negotiate with landlord here, can reduce part of rent by negotiation. As if we can bargain about everything here.

Rents are ridiculous here as well. It’s very hard to make ends meet! I’m so sorry.

It's not just there - rent here is also ridiculous. For the first time since my husband and I got together, we're renting a townhouse. We've always been house owners, now due to work we have to move and get a rental until we decide what area of this town and state we want to live in.

That is a terrible blow for you. I'm sorry. I have my house paid off BUT have pretty hefty house taxes to pay by the end of next month or be fined and if not paid, after a time, the county would put my house up on auction. Not fun.

That sounds so unfair. You have to keep paying for it even after the house is fully paid off.

Just be thankful you live somewhere that has rent caps.
There are no such thing as rent caps in the UK. Basically landlords can charge whatever they can get away with and in a lot of the major cities, where demand for accommodation is high, being a landlord is pretty much a license to print money.

Unfortunately the prices of everything have increased so much the landlord probably has a lot higher bills to pay for the place so that raised amount will cover whatever his expenses are too. I’m so sorry for you though it has to be hard to worry about that much extra every month.

I understand how you feel. It is very annoying when someone raises prices above the reasonable limit, especially now that economic conditions are quite difficult since the pandemic.
