Cliff Richard's Living Doll - A Song For Stalkers
Cliff,
If
You call a girl your ‘Living Doll’
I’m going to have to call
You out about
Treating ladies like some inanimate object.
Surely I’m right to object
When you want to lock a woman away
In a trunk expecting her to stay
Loyal to you
When you’re prepared to do
That to her, as it is abduction,
Kidnapping and forced seduction
When all is said and done.
She’s not going to have much fun
When you show her off to your envious friends
Inviting them to touch and feel the ends
Of her hair to check she’s not wearing a wig.
It’s a really big
Problem if a lady gets her hair patted, pulled and poked.
How would you like it if leering fans stroked
Your hair while someone treats you like a possession?
It’s a wonder the police don’t come round to question
You and your accomplice Shadows
Oh yeah, Hank Marvin knows all
About how you treat a girlfriend like a living doll.
Your backing singers are your accomplices in crime
Hank (and The Young Ones) should also be doing jail time.
Let the lady go Cliff, set her free from that trunk
If you don’t want to end up in a cell block bunk
For stalking, kidnapping and unlawful imprisonment
Oh I know you think your song cheerfully innocent
But your lyrics give me the creeps
You sound like someone who leaps
About grabbing girl’s hair
And chaining them up in some dungeon lair
without their consent
While family and friends wonder where the poor woman went
While she is locked in a box on the whims of a pop star
Who has the gall to go as far
As to boast about his stalking in the words of his songs.
She’s not your property Cliff, she belongs
Free.
Don’t you see
How much your song makes my flesh shiver and tingle?
With your possessive attitude is it any wonder you’re still bloody single?
Arthur Chappell
I do quite like this song, but it does strike me as rather over-possessive.

@LindaOHio A play on words. The song talks of keeping his girlfriend in a trunk so she can't get seduced by other men. The singer feels very lucky to have someone so beautiful as a partner and he's afraid of losing her. In my poem I suggest that could be interpeted-possessive and cruel. Another line in the song has him infatuted by how great the gir's hair looks and inviting others to touch it if they don't think it is real hair, which I expect, if taken literally, many women would find uncomfortable.
