Pulling out the stops

I wrote in a response today that I would need to pull out all the stops if I hoped to make payout this month. And then I thought that maybe myLotters might not be familiar with the phrase ‘to pull out all the stops’. It means to make use of all available resources; to use all your reserves to achieve an outcome. The phrase originated in the world of pipe organs. The stops are the stop knobs on the organ. By pulling them out or pushing them in, the volume and sound/timbre can be regulated. When all the stops are pulled out, there is no barrier to the airflow and the organ will produce as much volume as possible for that particular instrument. And now you’ll have to imagine a photo of a pipe organ.

At full blast, they can be almost intimidating. I love how the player has a mirror so he can watch the conductor/priest/whatever.

An organ at full blast is pretty imposing, that's for sure.

I was familiar with this expression. Cricket commentators use this term sometimes. Yet I never knew about its origin. So it was nice knowing about the origins of this term. Have a nice day.

I suppose eventually we'll get used to not having photos but it does limit to some degree what you can write about.

Oh why are you pulling out all the stops to make payout? You are always so popular here and you write a lot of discussions

@JudyEv I feel the same way. I don't use a lot of photos because there is usually editing to do before posting them. They are always the wrong size and I never know if it will work this time.

When I couldn't add photos, I stopped writing for a while. I hate not being able to add photos so I haven't made many pennies at all this month.

I have heard the term "pull out all the stops." I never knew the origin of the phrase. So, you pull out all the stops and it's full speed ahead?

@JudyEv I keep thinking about a phantom playing wildly in the night. It echoes through the chambers and out the doors People are afraid when they hear it or pass by and wonder what will happen when the music stops. It is just my writer's imagination going here. It is safe, --or is it?

I have played a pipe organ. It was at my college. I did "pull out all the stops" for some of the music. The sound was beautiful. I use that phrase pretty regularly.

@JudyEv That's what I thought too. I did try to foot pedals. But not when I was actually trying to play a piece.

Yes, I did know that about that saying, but only because one of my grandmothers told me that. She played the organ. I try not to stress about the payout. Some days, it's just impossible for me to be here much, if at all.

Payout is a matter of pride I guess. A bit of OCD too as when I start crocheting I'm not happy unless I use the whole ball in a day. It's good we're all different.
