Today’s bonus!

A few days ago someone on Freegle asked for some clothes hangers. I offered as we have far too many, but the person said we were too far away as they were recovering from surgery and couldn’t travel far. So I said I would drop some off one day. Today was a nice day for a bike ride so I popped over with them. And on the way back I passed a skip where I found some useful things being thrown out, including a set of metal hoops such as are used to support fleece or netting in the vegetable garden, two large plastic crates I can use to take excess apples to the local food larder, and a novelty Christmas decoration headband I can wear when I’m on duty at the panto. So a win all round! All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2023.

I love to find useful things that are being discarded. It is nice of you to drop things off anyway.

@Fleura Hmmm, maybe it should become a regular part of your route.

@snowy22315 New ones come and go all the time, I could spend all my time cycling around the town spotting useful 'trash'!

It just makes you wonder what other things are you missing when you don't pass that way!

Many years ago I remember reading in a little book on self-sufficiency, something along the lines of 'Skips are a useful source of everything from firewood to building materials, I never pass one by' - I think that should be our family motto!

@Fleura It all helps toward keeping things out of the landfill too. Have a great day. What is a skip?

Do you have a wagon attached to your bike?

No but I have a basket at the front and one at the back, and several bungee cords.

@Fleura We are also reducing the quantity of things we have at home. I bring a lot to the local charity.

It was just a short bike ride on a nice morning, and it saved me throwing them out (which of course I wouldn't do, I would just keep them cluttering the place up forever) - so why not?

Good for you. There is a road verge pick-up soon and there is all sorts of interesting junk lying on footpaths. I need to go for a walk too.

The problem with just leaving things on the roadside is that if no-one picks things up they just become litter. And of course different people have different ideas about what is rubbish.

@Fleura The council goes round and picks up all the stuff. It's only there for a week at most. It's amazing what gets chucked out though.

@Ronrybs Quite right, who wants to live in an empty box?

Indeed I did! Probably not a win from the de-cluttering aspect, but the hoops will be used outside and I've already given one of the crates to the food bank so it isn't that bad!

@Fleura Sitting here surrounded by books and many other items, I feel de-cluttering is over rated!

You rode an MTB or road bike? Do, you are ready for a Christmas celebration, right? That's great.

A road bike. Yes I volunteer at our local theatre and at Christmas we are encouraged to wear decorative items, so now I'm ready!

@fleura I took a defunct printer to the local dump today and spotted many a useful piece of ’rubbish’ being tossed aside, and a big notice telling us not to remove any items. Pity.

It's criminal that they won't let us take useful things away, isn't it? Last week one of the staff did say (when a man was handing over a tile cutter, used once) that they donated usable items to charity. I hope that's true.
