How I spent Thanksgiving 2023

This is the first time my husband and I hosted thanksgiving dinner in our home.
It was a very small invite list we only invited my parents and my oldest nephew as well as my husband’s one sister and her two children with the later three not showing up. Actually I invited my sister and her other 3 kids for dessert but they didn’t make it either.
My husband and I usually are a very bad team in the kitchen. He likes to listen to music and I need silence to concentrate. He has no patience and can’t stand anyone in the way for even a second when he’s making food.
He left the music off and he didn’t get impatient at all. We did well and never bickered at all it was so nice. He went hunting in the morning then came back and helped get the food ready.
My two year old was tossing and turning from about 6:30 am until she got up around 8am. I hadn’t gotten to bed until 1am so being woken at 6:30 was no picnic. After cooking and cleaning all day I never go to sit down until after 10pm. I am very tired but it was a very nice day.
My mother made the Turkey and gravy. I made special mashed potatoes, blueberry crisp, pecan pie cupcakes, Tennessee onions, stuffing and Pumpkin-mallow dessert. My husband made candied yams, carrots, green bean casserole and crescent rolls. We actually both wound up making a meat and cheese platter mine of which you can see in the photo.
The photo is my Pinterest fail. I didn’t have enough pepperoni to make it look better.

@celticeagle my husband and I didn’t really discuss ahead of time what we were planning to make. So I got groceries to make this and the following day he came in with Ingredients to make a charcuterie board as well . Most of his got eaten but mine didn’t so we’ve been snacking on it since.

I do not think that your platter looks like a fail at all, it looks really festive and appetizing.
Good job that your hubby was agreeable in the kitchen and helped you working together so well.
I hope that he will be helpful with the clean up, or offer to help with some of your every day chores today when you are busy cleaning up and getting things back to normal.
Soon it will be time to decorate for Christmas.

@Juliaacv thank you but we all got a good laugh looking at it. I’ll attach a photo of what it was supposed to look like.
Usually my husband doesn’t help with cleanup but he did offer. I thanked him very much for offering but told him to go ahead and just relax in the living room while I do the cleanup or he’d just be in the way mostly. It took me hours to clean it all up.

We worked on our meal together, too. What are Tennessee onions?

@GardenGerty that’s nice to hear you guys worked on your thanksgiving meal together as well. Tenessee onions are sliced and separated into rings. Then you add seasoning and stir it up and put it in a dish. You too with Gouda cheese and pats of butter and bake it. It’s so good. I’ll give you the recipe I use.

Hey that platter is great. I love it.
Glad to hear your husband has been nice to you for a change. Has he been reading the myLot jury comments? Let’s hope this is the start of better things ahead for you.

@Orson_Kart no I mean like over wifi he could see the history of the sites I visit etc. I don’t think she would have told him I messaged him. I’ll look and see if they are even friends.

@shaggin He can’t see your messages unless he has your password. Just change your password if you are worried. Maybe the other woman told him you’d messaged her?

I have found the small, more intimate gatherings best over the years, especially for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Dinners where there are six people or fewer are quieter and provide more quality time and personal conversation.
I can see what you are saying about your platter, and it is still cute.

@Chellezhere I feel bad when people get left out though but everything seemed to work out okay this year for us all doing smaller gatherings.

@shaggin It is sad when people get left out. I live in senior housing. There is usually a potluck for each major holiday, and I do not attend them. Several of us here no longer attend these dinners because of the two or three who think they own the place.

Sounds like it was a pretty good day overall...although a few no shows. I made a turkey veggie platter..it turned out kind of nice although of course not as cute as the pic. By the time I got to the destination a candy eye fell in the dip and looked weird...although overall I thought it was pretty cute. I should have sent a pic when it was at the height of it's beauty..

@allknowing we are both good cooks I think that’s the main reason the food turned out good but being able to concentrate helped for me to not mess things up. Everything went off perfectly.

There's nothing wrong with your meat and cheese platter. I can definitely see a turkey there.
I'm glad everything went well and it sounds like you had a lot of delicious food.
I hope you're all sleeping well tonight.

@Daddyevil I’ll attach what it was supposed to look more like.
The food was all good everyone commented that . I didn’t like the pecan pie cupcakes at all though.
I didn’t get to bed until after midnight then my two year old got up at 6:17am. My husband told me to go ahead and sleep and I tried but it was too noisy so by 8am I gave up and went downstairs. I very much appreciated him letting me try to sleep. Even if I couldn’t fall back asleep it was nice to rest. Maybe my little one will nap today and just maybe I’ll fall asleep as well. I doubt it but I can try since the house is all clean and tidy and with all the leftovers I won’t have to worry about cooking today.
