The shortest day of the year is approaching It is December 21st or so. I remember walking home from school (and after-school activities) in the dark. But I also remember (from younger days) having to go to bed in Summer at 7 or 8 PM when it was still light out. Do you have similar memories? The shortest day of the year approacheth. At least here in the Northern Hemisphere.

When I was in grade school, we were let out at 3:25 and took the school bus across town to a school on the city's edge. There there were other students who got off of our bus, the wait time there was usually about 20 minutes. At 4pm we were on our way home. It was a long 12 mile drive to get to our stop. We usually got home about 4:30, unless the weather was poor, and then it was later. it was dark soon after we got home. In the summer I had to go to bed early, when it was still light out, when my brothers got old enough to help my Dad out on the farm, they were able to stay up later, but not me. I swear I never stayed up until dark until I started babysitting when I was 12.

Heck, it's 6:30 PM and I'm thinking of going to bed. With no parents hounding me.

@TheHorse We used to go to sleep at 9:30 when we were young. We could stay up until 10 pm during the summer vacations.

I remember a few times getting home as it was getting dark. We'd have after school sports, band practice or something. It was only three blocks and a street over but when the rumors of the zodiac killer were all over the school, we ran like the dickens and made it in five minutes. Didn't know I could run that fast.

Heh. We had "mean kids" on the streets in Chicago, but nobody ever got killed on the way home from school.

The only times I walked home from school in the dark was when I went to a dance. It was still light at 4 pm in Elora.

I always managed to get home at dusk. It was when I went to university that I would come home in the dark during winter, I really hate this I mean here it is just 6 PM and it is pitch black outside,

I don't really remember these things. I remember days getting shorter or longer but that didn't affect our bedtimes too much.

I distinctly remember thinking it odd that I had to go to be when it was still light out. I guess that was in the Summer.
