I have shared stories on this site of overdue library books that were checked out and returned to the library that the person checked out a long time ago in the past. The Carbondale Public Library which is located in Carbondale Pennsylvania recently had a book that was checked by Horace Short who is likely now deceased in 1904 was returned to the library mentioned by personnel of the Hawley Library who found the book called "The Cruise Of The Esmeralda" that was written by Harry Collingwood on Friday December 1, 2023. The book was located by the officials of the Hawley Public Library at a book sale. The officials of the Carbondale Public Library have a $10 fine limit for overdue books. Had the book been returned earlier this month, the fine would be 872.82 in 1904 since the time of the book being returned would have been two cents per day for 43,461 days. In today's time with the late rate being .25 cents per day, the fine would have been $10,910.25. At least the book is back at the Carbondale Public Library today. Thnk of all the books that could be purchased with that amount of money. Nice that the library doesn't charge so much.

That is very true that libraries either have dropped their late fees or only fine late books a small amount.

@Deepizzaguy ........Some books are probably worth more than the amount of the over due fees.

This is awesome that this book was returned 119 years later!! This is an antique and may be worth a lot of money. I have books that would have fines of at least 3000.00 but thank goodness for library amnesty where they will erase any amount owed. It was That book's destiny to be returned.

I always take my library books back early because I am scared I will forget about them. I bet this book could tell a few stories about where it has been hidden all these years.

You are right that if books could speak the book will tell anyone that hears where the book traveled.
