Traditional or “Different”: Which Are You?

These Christmas flamingos pictured are the favorite of all my Christmas decorations; I love them. I’ve never been a traditional decorator for holidays, and people have varying degrees of responses. Most think “different” decorations are fun, but occasionally I get a few “You’re weird” comments. If this is weird, I’m happy to be it. Are you a traditional Christmas, or just holiday in general decorator? I love a nice classy scene as well, as it’s just fun to see what everyone comes up with.

Oh my gosh, your Christmas flamingos totally go with your pink tree ! I'm all for whatever a person feels . . . I mean if we all had the same taste, life would be pretty boring. I don't decorate too much for any occasion, but I do like to change things up from previous times if I can. Mixing it all up can work too .

Yes, they go really well with the tree, and I even have a small, sitting flamingo that plays Jingle Bells.

I love those flamingos, I am a mix of everything from different to traditional and sometimes just plain confused when all the overwhelming memories come over me,

@Tampa_girl7 I’m sorry it is still so painful, and that is more than understandable. It would be special to have one of his flamingos nearby. My mom had a lot of Precious Moments figurines, and I took one to keep in my apartment just to remember her a little every time I see it.

@AmbiePam Much of their things are still in their home. At least some of the flamingos are there. If I go in the home I’ll take a photo. I find it harder and harder to go in. I may take one of the flamingos for myself.

I think your Santa flamingos are adorable! I guess I like a mix, some traditional and some strange things. Years ago we had a deer head with large antlers on the wall and at Christmas I always put a red nose on it.

@AmbiePam It was cute, but thankfully we retired him to Dale's shop. We've done very little decorating this year except for the Christmas tree. Dale usually puts up lights outside and I decorate the inside.

You must know by now that I don’t celebrate Christmas, but I love your flamingos! I have two pink ones in my garden in Connecticut, where flamingos have never set foot

Someone, I forget who, said a few weeks ago Dianne would be preparing for Hanukkah. I was like, wait, I don’t think she celebrates Hanukkah or Christmas. I love anyone who has flamingo anything!

@AmbiePam Silly you! Actually, I don’t celebrate Hanukkah since it’s a kids holiday. I just give gifts, but I am Jewish. My brother and my younger son celebrate Christmas because their wife/girlfriend celebrate. In this day and age, anything goes - well, almost

I think it depends on what is traditional for the person. My tradition might be someone's weird. I think of myself as a traditionalist when it comes to decorating because it's what I've always done. I try to add more every year to make it even more festive. I love the flamingos. They are so cute!

Thank you, Valerie. I love all the decorations of yours I have seen from the pictures. I don’t think of you as traditional, but maybe your creativity straddles the line of both.

I am non traditional. I have, in the past, made tomato cage Christmas trees, long before it became a thing on Pinterest.

I suppose I'm traditional but it might be because I don't have much imagination. This year, because I've had to try to make some decorations, I've been really amazed by how people can make such beautiful decorations from very everyday items. I'm going to make more of my own next year.

Love the flamingos. We only put up a tiny tabletop tree and a wreath on the door. Minimalist for sure. Have a great day.

Mostly traditional things like Santa's, Angels, reefs, little Christmas trees, stars, candles and snowmen. However, I do have some crazy looking tree ornaments like a moose dressed as a baseball coach, a Santa NY Met player, a teddy bear holding a tennis racket. Just to spice things up a bit So, pink flamingoes huh, any "different" decorations for your tree?

I love the unusual, and the things that are used with imagination, like the flamingoes. I have a very old nativity set, it was my great grandmother's. I proudly display it every year. But I also love unusual, I tend to be quirky and eclectic in my so-called decorating--I am more than tired of dark, stuffy furniture and formality. I like comfortable furniture, family pictures, and things that make me happy.

@AmbiePam I was married to a man for years who loved for everything in our home to be stuffy and formal. That isn't me. Formality has it's place, yes, but in a busy home with 4 kids plus extras most of the time, formality wasn't wanted or needed. I am one of those people who like the unusual, the things that spark conversations and bring back good memories. Formal furniture has no place in a home full of children. I just strive for happy and as clean as my time and energy would allow! So great taste? I don't really know. I only know life is short, go with what makes your heart happy!

That is definitely different then any decorations I have seen for Christmas but if you like it then that is all the matters. It should be fun to decorate for Christmas not have to feel pressured to do what everyone else does.
