It's Just Their Job

I find having to have my receipt checked when I am exiting a Walmart store to be highly annoying, and many people agree with me. At the same time, it's their policy, they are entitled to it, and the people who work the doors are simply doing their jobs. So, I just hand them my receipt with a smile and remain friendly. I have nothing to hide. Nothing is stolen. There is no need to ruin an employee's day just because I think it is silly. Besides, I am a strong supporter of keeping jobs anyway, which is part of the reason I absolutely REFUSE to use self checkout lanes. I want to support the cashiers. I want to support the JOBS. If it means someone gets a paycheck to stand at a door and check my receipt, so be it. I like that they are getting a paycheck and I do support it.

I don´t like self check out lanes but for different reasons. The technology escapes me. A few days ago there was a long line in from of me and I had only a couple of things to buy. So I asked a younger man in front of me if he would help me and he said "sure, I always do it for my grandma". I felt a 1000 years old.

I can definitely see how certain aspects of self checkout could be more than confusing. lol

I’ve read conflicting things…some that self-checkout lanes are here to stay (and, honestly, I don’t object to them for a couple of items….not an entire month’s worth of groceries, though ), and others that places like Walmart are returning to more checkout clerks…NOT because of complaints, but because of the high theft.

I can definitely see where self-checkout can present "opportunities" for people to cheat. I think at the end of the day it DOES detract from the entire customer service experience, but I still think helping to support jobs is also important.

It definitely annoys me but I would never be rude about it

I don't know why a lot of people ARE rude about it. The way I see it is that one knows they will have their receipt checked if they shop at Walmart. Take it out on upper management, but no need to berate the poor employee just doing their job.

@porwest There is one store that I have gone to in one area that the guard checks receipts but most places they do not. I ask if they want to check and they say they do not. I guess they believe me. You are right it is their job. I used a self checkout lane once when a clerk I liked at the time helped me because I do not understand them. She has since retired or moved on to another store not in my area so I lost touch from her. It does not bother me when they check my receits because I like you have nothing to hide.

@porwest I get it but we do not have any of those here in Jerusalem that I know of. There is one store ibn an area I used to live in that I liked to go to every so often and they would check receipts. Most here do not.

Actually, other than places like Sam's Club and Costco, Walmart is the only store I shop at that does check receipts at the door.

That's my take as well. They simply work there and are doing what they were hired to do. Any complaints should be directed upward, not at the employee simply doing their job.

It never bothers me to show a receipt if required where I go. Like you said, it's their job. I have to agree about self-checkout, I hate it with a passion and I will not use it, no matter where I go.

Even if I only have a couple of items, I still will not use self-checkout. I just refuse to use it.

@MarieCoyle We agree on this one. Now, if they want to give me a 10% discount on my total, sure. Now I might consider it. Other than that, I am going through the regular checkout lane.

@porwest I also refuse. I don't work there, I'm not doing it. One of the dumbest things ever invented.

Me too. It's not the employee's fault. They are simply doing what they were hired to do and that's that. I KNOW when I go into Walmart, they will want to see my receipt. So, making a stink about it just because I think it is silly, KNOWING what to expect, would otherwise just make me an a$$hole. And I don't want to be that. Some people simply go out of their way to be rude and obnoxious. I try to go out of my way to not be.

I support them, too. Most people know us, so the greeters don't even ask anymore. Unless we buy something really big.

The people at the door, I find too, are usually the same people, and I shop there enough, I do think they are beginning to know me. But we have a pretty big store with a lot of people coming and going, so maybe not. Either way, I see no need to give them a hard time.

I agree with you at least they have a job. I go in the shortest line to get checked out.

For me it is irony. I usually PICK the shortest line, and then watch the LONGEST line finish up before I even get to the register. Just my luck, I guess. lol

I agree with your point about keeping jobs, but having worked in retail I can tell you almost every company in America has a policy of not stopping or pursuing shoplifters due to liability reasons. So, with that in mind, I wonder why companies bother checking receipts as people exit the store. They can't stop you if you don't have a receipt or refuse to show it to them.

@porwest I have nothing to hide either, so they can check my receipts all day long. But sometimes, just for fun, I feel like challenging them and keep walking as I say to them “Just try and stop me.” Of course I would never do anything like that, but I do think about it sometimes.

I guess it is supposed to make people FEEL like they will have to answer to someone. Of course, criminals don't care...so...yeah...the point probably is a bit moot. Either way, like I said, I don't have a problem with them checking. I have nothing to hide, so what do I care?

The last time I was at Wal Mart I was using the electric cart, I kept having people walk in front of me and stop to talk. I rear ended three shoppers and when I was leaving I handed the person at the door my register slip. He finished checking it when one of the security people walked in front of me and stopped, right in front of the cart as I was starting up. He too got rear ended!!! I'm not too anxious to repeat the trip. When you hear the report on how much merchandise was stolen this last Christmas, you can understand the checking. Target is locking up their merchandise and Wal Mart is closing more stores and also implementing lock up for much of their merchandise. Other stores are having to close due to huge shoplifting losses.

That's part of it. What they are looking for are certain higher ticket items specifically. I am not sure if it ACTIALLY reduces theft, but I am happy someone gets to earn a paycheck doing it nonetheless. Do they have Walmarts in Hong Kong?

@porwest Yes, there are several Walmart stores in Hong Kong but I seldom go there. The stores are not located near my place. I usually shop in the Mall which is just 5 minutes walk from my place. There are supermarkets and varieties of shops. I also shop online.

Ultimately, whether or not it actually works, it is designed to protect consumers. Theft costs all of us money.

Policy is policy and no reflection on the shoppers. I was thrilled to have my groceries delivered from Walmart on Saturday with no problem whatsoever,

That's sort of the way I look at it too. No reason to hold employees in contempt if what they are doing is simply what their employer has told them to do, even if we disagree with the policy.

@TheHorse Yeah, shoplifting is not something I prefer to do either. It's too much like stealing and I simply can't justify it, even if no one will likely stop me or prosecute me for it. lol

Something I don't like is they single out some they assume might be stealing just because of their looks. I watched that happen and when I went to hand mine, I was just waved on. You either check all or none.

@just4him They mostly ramped up this practice when they added more self-checkouts. So, if it has been a couple of years, maybe they are checking them now? Incidentally, we went to a different Walmart in Waterloo this time (we like to have a change of scenery once in a while) and they did not check receipts at the door there.

Me either. But the self checkouts I will not do. I prefer to save jobs. Interestingly enough, the ones MOST likely to USE self checkouts are the ones who also clamor for higher wages and job security. Makes no sense. lol
