Bacon Wrapped Turkey

I am not a person who likes turkey, mainly because it always seems dry. Then a guy and his wife from my dad’s church sent something from their dinner party home with my dad to eventually pass on to me. Green beans with diced onions and bacon, mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade rolls, and four “mini loaf” pans of turkey wrapped bacon. I don’t know what they did in cooking that turkey, but it was so moist and flavorful! The bacon was added after the turkey was finished cooking, so I can’t even credit the flavor of the bacon. I’d like to know their secret. Does anyone out there like turkey? We never really had it for Thanksgiving either, which is when Americans traditionally go turkey crazy.

I enjoyed turkey when I was young. I always ate the dark meat. Usually having a leg. I’m no longer crazy about turkey, but we occasionally have one. I do like sliced deli turkey for sandwiches.

I like it, and turkey wrapped bacon sounds yummy too. Isn't supposed to be bacon wrapped turkey though? How do you wrap turkey around bacon? Isn't just liked in the center or something...That reminds me I have some ground turkey here too and some bacon. I have never tried it, but a former roomie used to make a bacon wrapped meatloaf that looked pretty good.

I first wrote bacon wrapped turkey. Then I switched it. Then I switched it again. Then again. Then I told myself I was wasting time, and I should just leave it. *I fixed the title for ya.

We love turkey. We have had bacon wrapped turkey before and liked it. If you buy those cooking bags, made by Reynolds Wrap sold with ziplock bags and such, they seem to keep the turkey moist.

I don't remember the taste of turkey. I think I ate it many years ago. I like mashed potatoes.

We found the one person in America who doesn’t like bacon! Actually, your body probably thanks you for that since it’s not exactly healthy.

@AmbiePam I've mentioned to other friends that I'm not big on bacon and they act like I have lost my mind at times lol. Incidentally my father doesn't eat pig products at all, and hasn't as far as I've ever known.

Actually I love turkey and like it way more than chicken. That bacon wrapped turkey sounds delicious and how nice of that couple to send you such a nice meal. If you find out the secret to that moist turkey let us know. I do agree that turkey is a bit on the dry side.

I like turkey, and I don't usually find it dry, I guess it depends how it's cooked. Also I always preferred the legs. When I was growing up we always had a turkey at Christmas but since then I've had other things more often, we've only had one turkey as a family I think. When I was living in MN, one year I was invited to join some distant not-quite-relatives (long story) for Christmas or Thanksgiving, and they prepared a deep-fried turkey. Never heard of that idea before. I don't think they had either, but their son produced this huge fryer and supervised the cooking (we were all a bit scared to be honest!) But the resulting turkey was really very good.

Oh yes, deep frying a turkey is very popular here. The amount of fires started over the holidays due to deep frying accidents is incredible. I never got the option of a turkey leg. By the time the turkey made it’s way to the table, it had been cut into pieces, and you selected the meat from a huge tray. Eventually, there was so much turkey left over everyone switched to serving a big ham. That they did let you cut your own (not that it mattered since all ham is the same).

I wouldn’t say it’s that much harder to chew, but if one cooks it for too long I bet it does get hard to chew.

@AmbiePam I thought so too. I remember my mom tried cooking duck and I did not like it as it was too chewy and wasn't juicy.

I am not a big fan of turkey meat itself either because of the dryness. That's good they made it in a way that it wasn't dry.... I do like turkey deli meat and I like turkey bacon.

I love turkey! Growing up, we'd only get it once or twice a year . . . yep for the holidays - so I always looked forward to turkey. And bacon is just so tasty . . . bacon and bacon drippings make a lot of things tasty !

Same as you, I do not like turkey because it is too dry. My husband liked, I used to buy a very small one that I baked in the oven. I used to spoon some chicken broth over the turkey while it roasted, take it out of the oven, cover and let it rest 15 minutes before cutting. It was not dry.
