How many hours a day do you just sit??

Maybe you work in an office, maybe you don't work outside of the home. Maybe you have legs that don't work right, or maybe you are just tired. Whatever the reason, how long do you actually sit? I mean, just sit, like at a desk or a table or whatever...I don't just sit. I am up and down doing things, on Mom duty with my son's care, and so on and so forth. A friend of my oldest daughter works in an office as a paralegal, she sits many hours doing research and such. Her health was always excellent, she eats healthy and does go to the gym several times a week. She doesn't pack any extra weight. She is 44 with several nearly grown children. Lately, her health has taken a downward swing. She now has high blood pressure, in the last year has had cancer twice, and her blood sugars are wacky. The doctor told her she needed a new line of work--NOT sitting down all day long. He said he has seen more people in the last 5 years literally dying right in front of his eyes, and the main cause always seemed to stem from sitting down all day, not taking the time for breaks or even to walk across the room. He basically told her that she looks healthy in weight, but she isn't healthy. She is currently using her many PTO days while she thinks about options. He said anyone who sits more than 5-6 hours per day shortens their lives considerably. The doctor read her this and then gave her a copy, for a wake-up call. Ouch. ''Excessive sitting has been linked to obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer. In addition, blood pressure rises when you're seated for long periods, and the lack of physical activity can lead to an accumulation of fat and cholesterol.'' .May 17, 2023 I have to admit, sometimes I get so tired, sitting all day is tempting. But I don't do that, too many medical people in my family would preach at me! How much do you sit?? https://sitflow.com/10-side-effects-of-sitting-all-day/

I know it can be easy to do. I don't really have the opportunity to attempt sitting that long, but I am glad now that I don't.

But if you're typing, or problem-solving, then it is mentally healthy. That said, I have to get off of my fatty acids more.

@TheHorse We couldn't survive without your problem solving skills, so keep on typing! Just remember to get up off of that fatty acid thingy...(which I doubt you have!).

I never sit for very long time. I go up and down the stairs, I check outside if the cat of my neighbor is around for treats. I clean the house, I cook, I do laundry and iron clothing. I get up very often from my desktop.

@MarieCoyle I do not feel well if I sit for too long. I feel the need to move.

With what all you do, I know you don't sit for very long before you are up and going again, Anna. It's good to keep all of our parts moving!

I sit all day for my job. I do get up every 20 minutes since I had a scare of blood clots in my legs last summer. The blood pools in your legs when you do not move them. I move them every few minutes now, I stand up and shake them out, I walk to the laundry room when I am doing wash to check on it, whatever I can, I take little steps.

Julia, that's good that you get up often and move around. I knew that, but lately I've been more aware of it all than ever after the friend's problems surfaced. I think there is a lot of truth to the old saying, ''If you don't use it, you lose it!'' So, I think I will keep my up-and-down habit going like you do.

@Juliaacv Mine look like a road map, don't feel too bad about it. Maybe we could use colored Sharpie markers and trace the veins and make pictures or maps with destinations in mind?

@wolfgirl569 Diabetes is very prevalent in my family, on both sides. I know it concerned my doctor. I finally dumped that weight that put me in the 'borderline' category for diabetes. For some reason, my BP is almost always pretty low, at least so far.

Just get up whenever you can manage it, and keep trying, Linda! Our snow melted yesterday, we had ice all night. I am not fond of ice. But the maintenance crew and the city spread salt brine everywhere, so hopefully that will help.

@LindaOHio I'm trying. I got my son back out of the hospital again yesterday, we have his meds for now and we have food. The car is gassed up in case he gets sicker again. I am not really worried about what kind of precipitation we have coming, but I do worry there could be a lot of ice. Last night it sleeted for hours, wrecks everywhere. But this morning we had some time above freezing and it's gone. Then it got colder and snowed a little bit. It's never boring, changes constantly! Stay safe and warm in your neck of the woods as well!

I never sit at a stretch for more than an hour. In the entire day, I might be sitting for about 3_4 hours. Fortunately, my professional work doesn't require me to sit except when I am evaluating answers, making worksheets or writing reports. My work involves a lot of movement and exercises.

At work I am up and down a lot. That is why I hesitate to give it up. Weekends are another story. I try to set a timer and get up about every thirty five minutes. Unless I just work through the alarm. I know it is not good for me. I have also read that sitting or a sedentary lifestyle can contribute to Alzheimer's.

Well, it sounds like you are well aware what all the sitting can do to a person, I think a sedentary lifestyle is not really good for anyone.

I sit a lot at work. I work as a receptionist. So most of the time I am sitting, unless I am going to the bathroom or have a question to ask or something. But I make sure I go for long walks after work and such.

You know I never really think about how long I sit. I get up and lay down for naps, I go to bathroom trips, I check on my cats and see if they need more food or water, I go to the kitchen to get myself some food. However, I do sit for long periods when I am writing and posting, just something I do,

Our bodies are just not designed to sit for endless hours, the same for standing in one spot--the main thing is to take frequent breaks.
