And the ice storm cometh...

Sometimes, they don't predict our ice storms correctly. This time, it appears they hit the forecast squarely on its head. It started exactly when they said it would, everything is covered with a glaze of ice, with more misting down and freezing on contact.
No school, lots of things closed, and already quite a few people are out there playing crash-up derby. I've heard of 3 bad wrecks in the last 20 minutes or so. I will be staying home!
Ice is nothing to fool around with. If you are in the path of an ice storm, hunker down and stay home, and be safe! We worry about losing power, but we are usually not down for too long when that happens. Time will tell.
**I tried to take a picture of our ice so far, but it's still too dark outside, so you get istock photo! **

OK, I admit it.
I lied, Anna. Not intentionally! I planned to not leave the house. We were doing our ''chasing medications'' thing for my son Friday and Saturday--you might remember I wrote about it a while back. Anyway, today his meds were to be refilled. And of course, once again someone had to make a 25 mile round trip to pick it up, because the pharmacy close to our house once again said $1300.00, and in the city, his insurance paid for it completely. I called this morning and arranged for someone to deliver it to us, because of the poor road conditions.
So, they called, and the delivery driver was in a wreck and there was no one else to bring it. So I got to drive on the ice and back, while it sleeted, etc. to go pick it up. If it wasn't an important medication for him I would have waited, but it was. It took nearly 40 minutes to go 12 miles there. While we were there, the sleet and ice really kicked in big time, so it took over an hour to drive the same distance home. No one went fast at all, I only saw one idiot. But there are a lot of cars in ditches, 3 jackknifed semi-trucks on the interstate not far from me, and numerous other wrecks.
I do not get irritated or annoyed easily. But this medicine situation is so frustrating, I want to scream. Ugh.

Driving on ice is nearly an impossible feat. It's nuts all the crashes. I am not going anywhere. Although my wife is still working and they have so far decided they will open the hospital pharmacy where she works, in St. Louis, at 11 am. But they are supposed to update her. I think they should just close for the day. I don't think the roads will be any better at 11 than they are now.

@MarieCoyle Yeah, there was quite a lot that closed. Hurts the economy, but life is more important of course and it was a wise decision for those who made it.

Our area had no school Tuesday, either. Too much ice and too many wrecks. So the kids were out early on Thursday, no school Thursday, Friday, Monday, and Tuesday, all for ice. Then today, the ice finally started to melt some about 2 PM. It immediately got so very foggy I can barely see across the street! Now we are under a dense fog warning, and there's been some more wrecks! Plus it rained so much before the deep freeze and the ice storms, now we have lakes of water everywhere and more rain on the way. We can't seem to catch a break here.

I lost track of what was closed today. Most state offices, schools, many office buildings, and so on. Just be safe, Jim.

So far, the ice is being continually backed off hour by hour. Every time I check the weather on my phone, it says the ice will start in 50 minutes, give or take a few minutes either way. Yet every hour when I check, the ice has not started yet. That is an answer to my prayers, so far. I hope it stays too warm overnight and tomorrow to prevent the rain turning to freezing rain. It isn't even raining yet.

I´m so very sorry! I wish I could send you part of the heat we are having to melt your ice.

It's ok, as long as we have heat and are safe and warm, it will pass. I am just so thankful I don't have to be out in it. I'm glad also that there is no school anywhere around here, as our buses seem to be notorious to slide off the roads when they are slippery, and no parent wants to go through that!

Yes, there have been a lot of homeless people die from exposure, as well.
You know what they say, if you have food to eat, something to wear, and a place to lay your head, you are doing better than so many. I am thankful for what I have, for sure.

Ice is the worst of storms that we ever experience.
I am glad that you are hunkered down and ready to stay in and stay safe.
I feel like we should have journals for various stay-in storms, so that we can read when the last one was and how our mindset was, have a laugh, write a new entry and move on.

@MarieCoyle I hope that you can keep it up.
I started one the last part of 1999 and it is amazing how times have changed our lives.

It is difficult to find writing times on some days, especially at this certain time of my life with my son ill. But hey, I can hope and dream of better times! Thank you.

I hope it doesn't get too bad there. Ice is not something to mess with. We might get some this week.

Yikes, Thankfully by the time that system makes its way here it should be too warm for ice.

I cannot even imagine. I really only know the wet stuff (which we have today). I've been in snow, but never "ice". I picture ice cubes falling from the sky and pelting everything. May your power stay on and keep you all safe and warm indoors!!

My power stayed on so far. Some people on the outskirts of my area are out, but to be fair, a truck hit a power pole and that's the reason.
No ice cubes falling out of the sky, but there was a time today when the sleet/ice fell out of the sky and looked exactly like those Dippin' Dots!

Thank you for the picture. It brings back memories of my childhood growing up in Minneapolis and wondering if winter would ever end and yes, we had ice too. You are so right better if you can to stay home when the ice comes because it is not fun to deal with and one can fall and hurt themself very badly.

I agree with you that it is best to stay inside. I am sorry what happened to the lady and glad she did not break any bones but having stitches is not fun either.

No, stitches are not fun at all. But broken bones take even longer to heal, she said she was just happy she didn't break any bones.

A lady I am friends with that lives a few blocks away from me, fell on her driveway last night on the ice. She didn't break any bones, of course everyone is thankful for that, but she did land on her arm and hand, and had to go get stitches in her hand from the fall. Yes, it's best to stay inside if a person can do that!

I would have much preferred snow over ice, but unfortunately, the weather guys didn't ask me my choice in the matter!

I know how hard it is when school is canceled, people often scramble for child care, etc. but sometimes it's just the safer option. I hope you can stay inside and be safe, Linda.

It certainly can. If I have a head's up and stay weather aware, I can usually be home or at one of the kid's homes before it gets too miserable outside.

You are so correct, we still have ice in our yard, and rain on the way. I won't go out in it. Very dangerous.

The road crews have put salt brine down, all kinds of scraping and such, and still, we have ice.
