What’s your idea of luxury?

I was just thinking about this the other day. I was reading an article about British women who have married Emirati men and gone to live lives of ‘luxury’ in Dubai. There they don’t have to work but live in gorgeous houses with domestic staff, drive fancy cars and spend their days shopping for expensive clothes and designer handbags. And posting about their expensive lifestyles on Instagram of course. Personally I can’t think of anything worse. Today Bing has a photo of the Maldives as its homepage. Yes the colours are gorgeous, it looks like a dream travel destination. But when you actually look closely at the resorts, they are really not that dissimilar to a housing estate, just with water in between the chalets instead of grass. What would you do all day? Certainly those ‘luxurious lifestyles’ are not for me. It takes all sorts of course, luckily. What would your lifestyle be if you were rich? All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2024. I wouldn't want that lifestyle. I don't know what my life would look like if I were wealthy, but not that.

I just feel if a luxurious lifestyle brings any hindrance to my emotional and physical freedom, and if it forces me to live a certain way that does not come naturally to me...I would be a bit apprehensive about luxury then.

I think that if I were wealthy like that I would buy a piece of land in a remote area and live a quiet life. I would want a place with a view of one of the Great Lakes, but otherwise, just a quiet life, and not have to work.

The biggest luxury we can have is to be able to realize each day we have enough to live a quality life without having to work and earn salaries each month.

@fleura I consider myself to be rich already!! Ideal lifestyle would be a simple one, unburdened by unnecessary possessions. Definitely not what Hello magazine might call luxury.

The word luxury is a bit hyped I feel...sometimes luxury may not bring that happiness as we perceive it to be.

Very true. It makes people strive to reach that generally-unattainable dream, and they miss out on the pleasures of life striving for something they will never obtain and even if they do it's a pretty hollow success.

I certainly would not want to sit on the Maldives all day and look at the water. I like to see and do things. If we were rich my lifestyle wouldn't be much different. I can't really travel anymore or get around; so not much would change. Have a good day.

What you have shared is a true definition of luxury. I don't know how my lifestyle would be if I were super rich but what I'm sure of is I won't have time posting about it on social media.

Same as you, what a stupid life! Not to mention that when those rich men will be tired of them they risk to see their dream "sand castle" to dissipate under their feet. My lifestyle would not be different. I would hire a gardener more often to do those things that I do not like to do in the garden, but I would change nothing to my actual life.

@Fleura - I have traveled when we were younger. My husband cannot travel anymore, so we have to enjoy staying at home. A friend of our Lawyer has been imprisoned during 7 months in Dubai... a mistake on his name, but it took so long before they released him. Those fake Paradise can prove to be the Hell.

Like you, I don't think I would change much. I would like to travel more, but right now it is school holidays that keep us tied down, more money wouldn't change that. And as you say, those 'rich' wives are just possessions like everything else, they can be disposed of easily.

I’d travel more , put a pool in and make a few home improvements. I’d especially like to put another bathroom in and finish my attic off into extra rooms.

I don’t think I will like that lifestyle. If I would be rich, my lifestyle would be living in a beautiful house near the beach or in the countryside with awesome landscapes and a beautiful garden. Have a relaxing life with my hobbies and just going to the city if I have to.

I am a very simple man and prefer it that way. If you have ever read, "The Millionaire Next Door," the basic concept would describe me. I live in a modest house, drive a simple truck, my wife has a simple car. We get to vacation when we want. We have a camper. AND we have PLENTY of money in the bank. I retired at 50. We have the comfort of knowing we have means and if we REALLY want something we can have it. That's about as luxurious as I get. I do not have money to have luxury. I have money to have comfort and piece of mind and most importantly, to have FREEDOM.

@Fleura If you don't like your crappy job, you can afford to quit. If you don't like your crappy house, you can afford to move. If you don't like your crappy day, you can take a vacation to a less crappy place. lol

I don't get a lot of luxury lifestyles either. I think the really rich who have it all worked out are a lot more private and understated than the flashy Instagrammers. I've no real interesting in shopping as a hobby or accumulating stuff. If I won the lotto jackpot, I'd buy a nice house, probably in France, with a good sized plot of land (I'm talking hectares here), make it cosy and then get to minding my own business! If I was going "nuts" I might take on a housekeeper and gardener but that would be about it.
