We often hear a lot said about sibling rivalry when brothers and sisters try to outdo each other. Maybe this is for the parent`s attention or maybe the siblings are naturally competitive. But nobody says much about Cousin Rivalry, where cousins try to compete against each other. This happened to a friend of mine who was the same age as her female cousin. She said that older members of the family always compared the two girls because the were the same age. This made the girls dislike each other in the end .

That must have been hard for you, did you beat your cousin at anything and did it affect your relationship with your cousin?

@lazydaizee We were close when we were young. She is exactly (to the day) two years older than me. We used to play together at primary school, but at high school things somehow soured and we haven't been particularly friendly since. I ended up going to the same university as her as well but that was just a fluke and I only saw her once I think while we overlapped.

@Fleura This is very similar to what happened with my friend and her cousin. They were really good friends until they were about 14 and then it all changed. Luckily they were not at the same school but they did have some mutual friends who also got caught up in it when they took sides.

@lazydaizee The worst is when they say "your brother/sister is better than you are".... terrible!

The adults do nor realise the damage they are doing when they compare young people who are basically very different from each other.

It is not good to compare anybody especially children and young adults who are still finding out who they are themselves.

Older members of the family should not do that. Have a good day.

I expect they were sorry when it caused unpleasantness, but they probably did not mean any harm.
