Not such a good idea after all

I’m not much of a one for doing exercise for its own sake. I ride my bike a lot as a means of transport and I work in the garden fairly often and go dancing about once a month. But that’s about it. Every now and then I wonder if I should do a bit more, but I want something fun otherwise I know I won’t do it. I have a skipping rope I sometimes use but I really need to do that outside and when the rain is pouring down that’s not ideal. So when I saw this in a charity shop I thought it might be a good idea. I wouldn’t pay full price for something like this but for a few pounds I thought it was worth a try. It’s a weighted hula hoop, so better for exercise than one of those flimsy hollow plastic ones for children. And it comes in sections, so easier to transport if you want to take it with you somewhere. Well it turned out not to be such a great idea. I can see why someone donated it! First of all it’s actually quite a pain to assemble, so it’s not as if you are going to put it together afresh every day and then pack it away again. So far I just put it together once and now it’s just getting in the way. Secondly, it is rather on the heavy side, perhaps too much so; it actually hurts my ribs and/or hips (depending on how good I am at getting it spinning) to use it. When I get it right it isn’t too bad but the many attempts where I don’t get it going properly are positively painful. I guess that’s a good incentive to get better! The third problem is that it isn’t the kind of thing you can easily do indoors, after all. Spinning a heavy hoop actually requires quite a lot of space and even though we have a big house it’s surprisingly hard to find an area large enough where I don’t bash the hoop into the table, sofa or even the aquarium! I might be able to do it standing on the bed, if I’m careful, but of course that isn’t too stable and the bed isn’t meant for standing on either. So all in all I wouldn’t recommend one of these. Maybe there are better versions out there, anyone else tried one? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

A regular one still has you working the same muscles. I haven't tried one in forever. You could always donate it back

@wolfgirl569 I haven't actually worked out how much this one weighs, I should investigate...

Yes I might do that. The kiddy ones are so lightweight they don't have enough momentum.

Yep, I can see why it was donated. Have to say it looks a fair old beast. So is it back to the charity shop?

Well I'm not giving up quite yet, but yes it probably will be. At least it was £5 for a good cause and may be again as well!

@Fleura I can see the poor thing just going backwards and forwards to the charity shop!

@Ronrybs Well if it does it'll be a useful ongoing money-raiser!

A few years back, I bought a regular hula hoop, but found I couldn't even get it to spin as I did when I was a kid, so it ended up being tossed.

I struggle with the lightweight ones but found it easier when I tried with some adult versions at a circus skills stand we encountered last summer. So that's what inspired me to give this a try.

@Fleura I'm glad you had success with the adult ones you found.

Two whole days in a row I've followed a ten-minute exercise routine for seniors. I know it's not what you're after but maybe a zumba/dance routine on YouTube might be more fun.

Maybe but I feel like a fool doing that sort of thing and with my partner working at home there is basically no opportunity for privacy. I could go the attic I suppose but the family would hear me jumping about on the ceiling I'm sure!

@Fleura I hear you loud and clear. I only do it when Vince is out of the house or I know he's very focussed on something. He wouldn't care but, like you, I feel a bit of a fool. With him being a bit deaf, makes it a bit easier. Old folks' exercises don't have too much jumping around.

I've never had a weighted hula hoop. I used to be quite good at spinning a regular one when I was a lot younger. The regular ones should be good for exercise as well. Have a good day.

@Fleura Outside is probably a good idea.

This is one I haven't seen yet. If it's that much trouble I'd try outside as you said or go back to my bike. Lol.

I'm regularly out on my bike but I don't go out just for exercise, especially when the rain is pouring down! And unfortunately cycling doesn't count as weight-bearing exercise so I need to come up with something else as well.

@Fleura I don't blame you I wouldn't go in the rain riding either.

I was never any good at it, even as a child, and now I'm sure I wouldn't be able to do it at all. There's a woman on fb who posts films of herself doing it. She seems happy and I think is slightly slimmer than the first one I saw.

The three problems must have been the reason why someone donated it.I have two left feet with hula hoop,I even have never got it spinning around my waist.

There are some lighter hula hoop I have played in the past. It was easy having it on the waist. The one you described sounds to be very heavy so that I wouldn't recommend it either.

My husband likes to buy this sort of thing. We have several items that are unused or have only been used once. They are now collecting dust under the bed, in the garage or up in the attic. they will stay where they are until we take them to the dump, or give them to a charity shop if they are not rusty by then.

My partner is a bit like that too. He has a fit of enthusiasm for something but it doesn't last long. He has roller blades in the garage, plus a big kite which has probably been out half a dozen times, and a mountain board which I'm sure he's only tried once.

Wow! Good try. Thanks for the honest review with humour. I'd probably start with a smaller plastic one. I can manage that easily. As soon as my back, hamstrings and tendon heal completely for sure.
