So, I got some Hamburger Helper yesterday. I made it with ground turkey because it was cheaper of course..Not really as good as beef, but oh well..however, on the side of the box it gave a recipe for making it with black beans. I think I am going to try that next time. Not only would it be money saving, it would taste good. In these days of inflationary prices, and wanting to keep the greenhouse emissions low, what better way to do so then to use plant based materials? They are healthier anyway. Have you ever turned a meat dish meatless?

@snowy22315 Really? I didn’t know about that, thanks for the information. With the tofu, I just sautéed it in the taco seasoning. I have no idea if I should have done it like that, but it turned out okay.

Hmm, that sounds interesting. If you can find it, another thing that makes a really good veggie taco is jackfruit. Sometimes they even sell it in a sauce pack.

@AmbiePam Yes, the jackfruit in sauce tastes exactly like pork or I think you could buy Italian and add to your own.

Hmm it really doesn’t sound good to me but I do like black beans so I would give it a try. I’ve never had hamburger helper but my son and husband like it. You mean to not use beef and use beans correct? I’ll have to see if I can find a box with that recipe on it.

@snowy22315 I’m always super picky about using a recipe then if it isn’t good I know it’s not something I did wrong.

@shaggin You probably don't even need a recipe, probably just black beans to taste..but a recipe would probably help to get the proportions right.

I am a vegetarian by choice. I cook chicken or fish for my family once or twice a week. We are mostly into plant based meals. We do have eggs regularly. I take eggs.

I like vegetarian foods, I don't eat them everyday though. Some days I just find I eat vegetarian without really thinking about it.

I have heard a few interesting recipes made with black beans, but have not tried them myself. Black bean brownies comes to mind.

They just have a good flavor. I don't think it is particularly "special." I just like it every once in awhile.

When I used to cook, it was all meat. My husband doesn't like meatless meals. I could easily go for a bean dish myself. Sounds good. Have a great afternoon.

Many moons ago, the best thing on the entire menu at a Wimpy was the Spicy Bean burger. A good bean burger is great.
I don't like the "meat replacement" stuff either. Usually it's ultra processed and not good for you at all. As you say, you can make a decent patty with plenty of things that aren't meat that are much better.

I do not like meat replacement, hence I'll never visit a "Plant Butchery". But I do make patties and cutlets with fish (mackerel, tuna, sprats, sardines), mushrooms, beans, peas, potatoes. It is not a replacement, its just a different cooking method to add variety. Some people add beetroot and carrot, but that is not for me.

Beetroot and carrot would make it more nutritionally complete.
