No, Not Doritos, But Close Enough

I am a snacker. I can't deny it. When it comes to potato chips or tortilla chips, I am a snacker. Yes, I am cheap. Yes, these are expensive. But I enjoy them. Sue me later. For the longest time I was getting this Kroger version of Doritos for $1.50 a bag. Much cheaper than the cost of actual Doritos mind you. A bag like this would cost almost $5. ***A little secret if you wanted to know...I can't tell the difference between Doritos and these.*** But today, on my trip to Ruler Foods, a Kroger store, the price jumped. Now they cost $2.49 per bag. Still cheaper than Doritos, but almost a dollar more in a week? Oh well. I like them. I will eat them. If nothing else, I guess I can justify them since I made a killing from my Texas Roadhouse stock not that long ago. But damn. You're killing me Smalls. Why'd you have to go up nearly a buck a bag in a week? Thankfully I also own quite a bit of stock in Kroger. I guess I can recoup the increase somewhere on the back end. But damn.

Yes, sometimes knock off brands are on the salty side.

I love potato chips, I do not buy because I know I cannot refrain from eating. I like nacho cheese, I bought three bags at Aldi when they were on sale at $ 2 each.

@LadyDuck I am real sucker for anything savory. I don't have a sweet tooth, so that's what I tend to go after when I am looking for something to snack on.

I love those kinds of snacks but can't have too much of them (mainly the MSG in them give me a migraine-like headache). So I "save" by not buying them at all . . . but damn, I miss those Doritos!

@porwest I am almost pretty sure they have MSG in it. MSG is disguised with over 50 alternate names and it's in a lot of these snacks. I can tolerate eating some of it - but if I lose control and pig out on 'em, oh I pay for it with a massive headache. Not everyone gets headaches, but those with high blood pressure need to watch it.

So far as I know, none of these products contain MSG. But I could be wrong.

That is quite a price hike! I would still be buying, but maybe cut back a bit. Still, if you own stock you are paying yourself, I guess!

@Aquitaine24 No. Not allergic. I think for me it is mostly the texture. I am not very fond of the taste either necessarily. But I definitely think it is more of a texture thing for me.

Have you ever tried Calidad White Tortilla Chips? They are delicious!! And give name brands a run for their money. I just picked up a bag of these cause the hubby loves tortilla chips and I knew we were almost out. They were on sale at the local Piggly Wiggly for only $1.39 for an 11 oz. bag. Win!

The name sounds familiar but I can't be sure. We don't have a Piggly Wiggly here. Does only Piggly Wiggly sell them?

Most store brands are made by the brand name suppliers. I can't speak for who actually makes Kroger's brand, but it MIGHT be Frito-Lay.

@Aquitaine24 Walmart is a great example. Their macaroni and cheese is made by Kraft. Their peanut butter is made by Jif. Their jams and jellies are made by Smuckers, and the list goes on.

The weird thing about tortilla chips (the unflavored ones) is that for whatever reason, the generic ones always seem extra salty to me.

I hate Doritos and I've never eaten them. Another student repeatedly dumped his Doritos dust on the hard cast I had for a compound fracture. Like every day. The cast eventually stunk. Doritos can drop off the face of the Earth as far as I'm concerned.

Unfortunately, yes. What people don't understand when they say "inflation is a global issue" is that the United States is the world's leading economy, and when inflation happens here, it becomes a global issue. Some countries already suffer massive inflation for other reasons—devaluation of currency, poor trade, poor management of their economies and so on and so forth. But inflation here makes inflation everywhere else worse.

I'm not too big on snacking on chips. Dad used to gobble them down like crazy, potato chips, taco chips, bbq chips, the list goes on and on. I'd ask him for a couple and he would snarl at me that I was too fat and didn't need them. He'd also do that in front of company too, which made me want to crawl under a rock and hide. I discovered a wonderful snack that he would beg for some and I told him that he couldn't have any because he was too skinny and they were healthy so they definitely weren't on his snack list. He would get so angry, and storm around...and Mom would sit and laugh like crazy at him about his snit, and she would tell him that he earned all the slams that I gave him. The snack is very simple, It's baked peas, they are so great and so tasty and my father wants some so badly and I won't give him any. Especially since they are hard to find in my area. I can find them in Smart and Final and sometimes in The Dollar Tree and in Trader Joes. You won't find them in my father's hands though. I buy them and hide them from him. In fact, I am planning to break out my bag of them to snack on when I crawl in bed tonight. It has been a busy day and I'm about ready to hang things up and get some sleep. Besides I have two cats that are ready to share the bed with me. Have a great night, and above all, Happy Snacking!!!

@porwest Gee, that worked out well! I stretched and my comment disappeared. They're called "Harvest Snaps" and come in a bunch of different flavors and sizes. You can find out more about them at their website: harvestsnaps.com. If you want a different flavor than what is in the store you have to order it and it's a bit more expensive.

I have never liked Doritos. I think they taste like chemicals, not sure why, but I just think they are not very good. But I am not a big chip person. I like tortilla chips and salsa, that's about it. OK, Jim...give this a thought. You wouldn't buy eggs when they went up in price a few weeks ago...you said you just wouldn't. But...your chips went up $1 and you bought them. I think I would get more milage out of the eggs, but that's just me. Doing a bit of shopping the other day, the cheapest eggs at Aldi shot way, way up since the last time I checked the price on them a few weeks ago. $3.49 per dozen. Still a rather cheap protein option, but I hate to see them climb up again.

Chemicals? I have never gotten that from them, but of course things hit people's taste buds differently, I guess. lol As for buying habits, it depends on the item, and it also depends on the "regular price." $1.50 was WAY below the average cost for a bag of any flavored tortilla chip of any brand or generic variety, and so it was WAY under the radar price wise, meaning that when the price jumped significantly on that one "brand," it was not a massive hike compared to what I would have expected to pay PRIOR to the reduced amount. Sound convoluted? Maybe. lol

@porwest Read this, and you might change your mind. Honestly, you could probably eat better out of a dumpster (not that I am going to try that and wouldn't recommend it!) but Doritos and their knock-offs are some nasty critters. You can use them as firestarters, because they have so much oil in them they will flame, according to this article!

@MarieCoyle Nah. Everything in moderation, and nearly everything we eat is technically no good for us and almost everything is processed in some form or fashion. When I walk into a graveyard and the sign on the gate says, "Everyone here ate Doritos before residing here," then I might change my mind.
