Our village may hold a garage/yard sale

When we moved, we had to do a lot of decluttering. Now we’re been here three years there are still some items that I don’t really need. I’ve been thinking that the residents in the village should hold a combined garage/yard sale but I haven’t done anything about it. My thoughts must have been flying about in the ether and today there is a note in a mailbox that a sale of this sort will be held on the school grounds. It will be restricted to sellers from the village but open to the public. Hopefully, I’ll be able to get rid of a few more items. The photo is of some items I still have but which I can probably let go of now.

Somebody read your mind! I'm working on decluttering, and I have a lot to do. Last weekend, I donated my wedding gown. I've been with my husband 35 years, so eh, I'm probably safe now.

I gave my wedding dress to a repertory company. Hopefully one day I might see it on stage.

I felt wonderful when I decluttered from the last place. We got rid of such a lot of items and it really did feel very 'cleansing'.

Oh this'll be lovely if you do. I once lived in a small town in Kansas and the whole town would have a once a year garage, yard sale. It was fabulous.

@TheHorse We sold a very cheap guitar before we moved and the guy was going to grow vegetables in it! I nearly didn't sell it.

I can’t believe it’s 3 years since you moved. I used to be so envious of your last place, but understand why you downsized. As I am getting older, I am definitely considering decluttering and only keeping stuff that is useful. I’ve collected so much over the years that I’ve never used, and it’s time to get rid of a lot of it. Unfortunately a lot of it I have some emotional attachment too, so it’s going to be difficult. I’d love to come to your garage sale, but you are too far away. Plus, I shouldn’t be adding to my collection for the reason stated above. However, if you were getting rid of some freshly baked cake, I’d reconsider.

@JudyEv Yes, go and leave straight away, otherwise it’s almost certain you’ll see something you must have. It’s a fine balance between getting rid of too much stuff and having just the right amount to live happily with. It’s the right thing you are doing and I want to do the same. I love cake and I am sure you bake fabulous ones, so I disappointed I can’t take you up on the offer.

I'm hoping I can resist picking up any more bits and pieces. Maybe I'll need to leave my stuff there and come back home so I'm not tempted. Mostly we're trying to make it easy for someone to deal with our place once we're gone. The sons will have to come from Ireland and Melbourne but they won't be able to spend ages going through a lot of junk. I could bake a cake if you want to come.

I agree with you, once you get the ball rolling on doing with less, it is best to keep that going. I usually make a trip twice a year to donate items that we can live without.

As the time passes here, it's becomng easier to let go of some things. For instance, I have serving dishes that got a lot of use at the old place but they are just too big for any gatherings that we have here.

@JudyEv Our daughter-in-law doesn't want my large serving set, but I have a feeling that our son does. Maybe in time, if not, eventually the choice to keep it or sell it or give it away will be his to make.

I wish ours would...so many things I could put in it. Although in a sense I hate getting pennies for something I paid dollars for.

I feel the same really but I can't sell on Ebay as postage is so expensive and I can't decide how much I want for things. But there is a lot that can really go just for pennies and at least it will be out of the house.

I tackled it by doing just one drawer or part of a cupboard at a time. Then the next day I'd do the same and as I got more done the more motivated I became.
