OMG - The nurse from the hospital finally called me back. She said they are giving my husband fluids and are treating him for a UTI. He complained that his hip hurt; so they took a scan. Turns out he has a fractured hip. The nurse said he was probably suffering while they were making him do physical therapy. OMG they will be doing surgery Monday or Tuesday. Hubs has a problem with anesthesia...he has trouble coming out of it; so I will have to make sure the doctor is aware of this. I will also have to sign papers to have the surgery done since my husband can't do it.
I told the nurse about him losing 30 pounds in 3 weeks and wanted to make sure they were working on feeding him. I also mentioned that he was fine, driving, etc. 3 weeks ago...she was surprised.
I had someone call me to ask if he would be having additional physical therapy after his release...what release? I don't see him getting released for a long time, if at all.
His sister is coming in from Phoenix tonight to see him. I will have transport to the hospital and company while his surgery is done.
Continued prayers and thoughts would be appreciated.

He probably did fracture it at the rehab facility.

@LindaOHio This is also my opinion and it is a shame that they did not check to be sure he did not hurt himself.

@LadyDuck He probably complained about his hip pain and he was ignored...or maybe he didn't complain.

I am not meaning to speak out of turn, but I rather hope the doctors evaluate his heart function thoroughly first, the 30% function needs to be considered before a surgery .
I am glad you will be having the sister there. Surely, you will be able to be at the hospital more.

Many dementia patients get UTI's a lot, it's a concern but at least treatable. No one likes surgery, but often it saves a life, so people opt for surgery.

@MarieCoyle The surgery worries me too. He has so many health conditions to consider.

My word!! When I worked in long term care if a patient began falling often, and did not make sense, possibly acted out the first thing they checked for was a UTI. And that broken hip! my heart hurts for him .

Can a UTI cause someone to not make sense, etc. He's been severely dehydrated. Could that cause a UTI?

I cannot even begin to imagine the emotions you are feeling right now.
During the surgery they should be able to identify how long he has had the fracture.
I hope that they can address everything he is experiencing.
It turns out well that your sister-in-law is there with you through this ordeal.

I'm actually handling it better than I thought I would. What tears me up is when I visit him. That's when it really hits home.

Your poor husband. How could no one discover that fracture I agree with @LadyDuck it might have happened at rehab. I hope the surgery goes well and I will keep him in my prayers. Now I am glad you will have his sister with you,

Thank you so much. I think the fracture happened in rehab too because he fell several times. When he fell off the porch, they checked him very thoroughly.

The hospital checked him out thoroughly. He fell several times in rehab. I think that's when it happened.

Our friend Al fell about three months ago. They Xrayed and said the broken vertebras in his back were old wounds, from his first fall three years ago! No wonder his physical therapy was painful!

Dementia can be quite rapid sometimes. In our family Uncle Mike was fine and then all of a sudden wasn't. He had a spell of something and three weeks later he didn't know who anyone was. It's such a sad and confusing disease. I hope all goes well with all of this. Thinking about you always.

I'm very sad to hear that dementia can come on so quickly. I wish it would have been gradual. It's such a shock.
