An easy evening

A post by @NJChicaa inspired me to write this. I mentioned before that I occasionally take on some events work. This is not going to make me rich any time soon but it does make a change from sitting at a desk, gives me an excuse to get out, and some of the events are quite fun! Well, a week or two ago I signed up to work at a drinks reception for university staff who had been given awards. Two of us were scheduled to be there from 5pm until 9pm. I showed up in good time, but there wasn’t much to do. The actual event was meant to run from 6pm until 7:30 or so. I helped move a couple of display boards and assembled a coat rack. Then I basically stood around chatting to the other agency staff member (Carol) who gave me tips on selling items on Vinted! When 6pm came, Carol manned the door to welcome the attendees and ensure no uninvited guests came to help themselves to champagne, and I took people’s coats and pointed them to the toilet if requested. Then I basically just stood there for an hour or so, listening to music provided by a string quartet and admiring the setting, in a gorgeous building that the public are not normally allowed to access, and here I was being paid to enjoy it! I didn’t have to set up tables or serve drinks or clear up afterwards, a catering company took care of all that. Things did go on a little longer than planned, but by 7:45 the lighting people had taken away all the extra lighting so that was a big hint to people that it was time to leave! After the last ones had departed, we packed up the coat racks and replaced the usual daytime seating and posters. Then we were told that we were free to go, even though it was only 8:15 and we were being paid until 9pm. Not quite as easy and brief as @NJChicaa’s experience but pretty good nonetheless! The picture is unrelated but shows what I saw when I got up this morning, to my surprise! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2024.

That was surely a pleasant event and you enjoyed music and a nice setting. It's still snowing there?

@Fleura - At least you do not have to shovel. We are at our 8th day of rain.

No, it turned to rain and then sun yesterday. But today is the opposite!

@LadyDuck That's true, although if it carries on raining so much we will have to shovel mud!

I'm glad you could help with the venue. It sounds like a good event. Snow is always wonderful to wake up to, in my opinion.

I wouldn't want to do it all the time, it would be too boring no matter how lovely the setting. But it certainly made a pleasant change from a computer screen!

That sounds quite an easy gig. Is that rain or snow I'm seeing?

Any extra money is never a bad thing. Of course, I always invest it, that way it pays me forever...kind of. lol
