I walked out of the movies

The photo has nothing to do with the text. It's another stone bridge we saw in our European travels.
We live in a retirement village and go to movies in the clubhouse once a week. Only ten or a dozen people turn up but that’s okay. We all go a bit early and have a chat and a drink before the movie starts.
We’ve always said we don’t mind what we watch and we like to support the guy who runs it each week. However, I had to walk out of last night’s movie which was The Thin Red Line, depicting US troops fighting the Japanese in Papua New Guinea. Three others did too.
I think it should have been called ‘100 different ways to die’. Men getting shot and blown apart isn’t really my idea of entertainment, especially when the graphics are so realistic.
The acting was very good showing the sheer terror of some of the young men. And the action was just as graphic. Much too realistic for me to get any pleasure from it at all.
I would normally be too embarrassed to walk out of a movie but I've decided I'm too old to watch movies I don't want to watch. This is just me of course. I know such a film wouldn’t worry some and that’s fine. We’re all different and rightly so.

I don’t blame you! Old movies got the message across — usually better — without graphic violence.

@TheHorse — absolute truth. There’s very little gore in The Birds and that move scared the fecal material out of me!

I would have done the same. I can't take movies that are too graphic.

That is one I would not have gone to in the first place, though some would like it. Did Vince feel the same way?

We've always just gone and watched whatever is on offer but we'll be more careful in future. Vince felt the same but that night he was responsible for running the film then shutting up the place after so he couldn't very well leave.

I think that maybe film makers are getting a bit more graphic in their portrayal of violence because people are getting a bit desensitised so it takes more to "shock" them.
I was just thinking the other day, after being asked why I didn't go to the works Christmas do on Monday, I'm getting too old to say yes to things I don't actually want to say yes to
At 47 I'm the oldest person at my workplace...the big boss is around my age but everyone else is from 16-25...the majority are teenagers.
I know what happens when they go out so I said I'm not going

I can understand the Christmas party bit. My friend can't understand why her sons' idea of a good time is to go out and get drunk as quickly as possible. Huh?
I think you're right about films needing to go that bit further to create an impact. I remember when films had wagon trains moving against a scenic backdrop. But then - I'm a bit older than you. lol
