How would you answer the question 'what is your relationship to your next-of-kin'?

Have you noticed how the questions on forms have changed somewhat over the past few years?
Once you never would have seen ‘what pronoun do you prefer’. Vince was highly tempted to put ‘me’, in answer to that.
I have a bit of trouble with those who want to be known as ‘they’ or ‘them’. When someone refers to themselves as ‘they’, I can’t help wondering where the rest of ‘them’ is.
Be that as it may, you can have a bit of fun with these forms. Vince had to put my name in as next-of-kin and the next question was ‘relationship’. Vince thought he’d put ‘strained’ while I suggested ‘fragile’.
Are you ever tempted to play around with questionnaires? They do seem to want a lot of information sometimes.
The photo doesn't relate to the post. It is of Claude Monet's garden in France.

This is wonderful Judy..I love the way you think about it..you are much more forgiving about it though than 'I'
Truly, I can't bear all that evil nonsense..not sorry if that offends anyone or they, you can take a long hike in the opposite direction of 'me.'
The photo is glorious!!!
How I would answer that question is this..strong and loyal and full of love.

Seems it's a Mad, Mad, Mad World. And one that's becoming more complicated and ridiculous each day. This is what happens when you have the inmates running the asylum. Guess the U.S. doesn't have a monopoly on leaders and media who lack common sense.
I'll continue to complete my applications like I'm a normal human being...

As a grammar perfectionist, I had a bit of trouble with the "them/they" pronouns. My son then pointed out that we do already use those pronouns when referring to the singular. For example, if we do not know whether a person is male/female or if we are speaking about someone who remains anonymous.
As for next of kin, I can understand being asked what relationship they are (see, I used "they" to refer to singular here ). It is generally assumed that a next of kin would be a spouse, parent, or adult child. However, that's not always the case. I work in social care, and this sort of thing is important! You don't necessarily have to state your relationship to your next of kin, but it can be helpful additional information.
As for how I'd answer the question of my relationship with my next of kin, I would probably say spouse (which is another word I've noticed being used more often than "husband" or "wife").

I hadn't thought about that use of 'they' but you're quite right. And we do fill in the forms correctly. I'm sure most of the answers are necessary but it gives us a laugh to think about being naughty school-kids and putting in some funny answers.

That is a beautiful garden, I am faced with all sorts of questions when I take surveys, Sometimes I am tempted to say things as a rant but of course, there is never any space for something like that.

You brought a smile to my face. Too funny about the strained and fragile. This gender thing has gotten really ridiculous, don't you think? Love the photo. Have a good weekend.

Probably not. But if not, why is the question there in the first place?

@judyev I get quite ticked off with all that nonsense. All because someone wants to be referred to as they doesn’t mean that I have to comply. This nonsense must be stamped out. “They” is not in charge of my mouth. It used to be my job to ask questions of people admitted to hospital. One of them was “What religious denomination are you?” The answers were hilarious especially since most people sit so distant from such things. Several people told me they were poor Catholics. The question alarmed a lot of especially older people who took it as a sign that all was not well. A lot of folk took exception because in Belfast we don’t ask such things (and we just know what everyone is anyway) but there are political connotations.

Here is a photo of the waterlilies in Monet's garden. They often featured in his paintings.

Very nice picture, too bad it isn't your garden :)
Yes, these forms, which no one reads, have very weird questions and some have nothing to do with the subject!!
