Dawn, my wife, just has a knack for meatloaf. And that's saying something because she does not cook. I am the cook in the house, and this is pretty much the only dinner she is ever in charge of.
But for good reason.
She made her "famous" meatloaf last night and it was absolutely delicious. She always tends to change it up just a little bit. Probably a product of living with me for the past 20 years.
For this batch she finely chopped a little bit of celery and green pepper and we ran it through the Magic Bullet and added that into the meat mixture. Then it was a little salt and pepper. Of course two eggs and some bread crumbs. She also added in a tablespoon or two of horseradish, French onion soup mix and very finely chopped onion.
Mixed it all together and formed the loaf and then put a little bit of French dressing on top and baked it.
It was to die for! What went on your dinner table last night?

I love good meatloaf. I do have to say I have never thought about putting French dressing on it. I don't use that particular dressing very often, I suppose I should experiment somewhat and do that!

Around our house we like to be creative and try different things. When it comes to meatloaf, sometimes we'll put on the traditional tomato paste. Other times it might be a Teriyaki sauce. Another time we might put barbecue sauce on top.
Even for the inside ingredients, we always use French onion soup. But sometimes we will add mixed veggies or leave them out. Or, such as in this case added some minced celery and green pepper.
Even when it comes to certain dressings, one might ask, would you put French dressing on a steak salad? Sure. If you like French dressing. So, if it goes on that, why wouldn't it go on a meatloaf?
As they often say, variety is the spice of life and before anything becomes a recipe, it was an idea first.

@MarieCoyle I think it is important to not always go with the status quo and to think outside the box. You never know what you might come up with or how it even might change food forever.
I often like to think about Glenn Bell, the founder of Taco Bell. It may be somewhat disputed, but the claim is he invented the taco. Before Taco Bell there was no such thing. Just flat corn tortillas. He decided to form them and fill them so you could hold them and eat them, and now we have tacos.

My family likes me to make meatloaf with a chili sauce on it rather than the standard ketchup most people use. Onion soup mix always adds a lot to a meatloaf. I make my own and put it in several things. It’s great in grilled burgers, too.

That meatloaf sounds delicious, I always made different kinds too. Among my favorites was a meatloaf wrapped around hard-boiled eggs,

What's the difference? Sometimes you toss on a little barbecue or Teriyaki sauce. You hardly even noticed it was on there.
Get outside the box. I am telling you. There is a whole world of culinary delight you are shamefully missing out on. Remember what I always tell you, before it was a recipe, it was an idea.
If all you ever do is follow a recipe, you are not a cook. You're just a preparer. There IS a difference.

And her meatloaf stays together by some magic. I had a PB&J sandwich. Have a good day.

Wow, Dawn's meatloaf sounds like a masterpiece! It's amazing how she adds her own twist to it. Last night, I opted for a classic spaghetti and meatballs dish. Always a crowd-pleaser, but now I'm craving a slice of that heavenly meatloaf!
