Solar Eclipse 2024

How it looked from my side yard in Olney Illinois during the 4 minutes of totality. Most definitely one of the coolest things I have ever witnessed. It got dark enough the street lights came on and I could see stars. I'm so glad it didn't cloud up on us.
Shot with a Canon SX410 IS, no filter.

@Scarred4Lyfe I will consider what Number 1 might have been but I don't really need to know.

@TheHorse Another celestial event. The first time I saw Saturn with a real nice telescope.

Quite possibly the coolest thing I have ever seen. If not 'the', then definitely in the top 2.

Um - not sure what you mean by 'street level'. I had a camera on a stand with a tight zoom trying to follow the sun.

@rebelann I can best describe it as looking like extremely bright moonlight during part of it.

This is the best solar eclipse shot I have seen, congratulations!
We had a total one in 1999, it was August, blue sky and suddenly total darkness. It was worth watching.
Your Canon SX410 IS is a great camera. Smartphones cannot take that kind of pictures.

@Scarred4Lyfe The eclipse of 2017 was more visible in the west of Switzerland, the only 100% I remember is the one of August 1999.

We had the one 7 years ago, but it was only 97% eclipsed then.

Didn't appear to bother them any, birds got really noisy like it was bedtime.

Did you look into the lens when you took the photo? As far as I know, the light at this time is not very good for the eyes.

The sun is safe to look at when it is completely obscured like in my discussion photo, but for the other pictures (such as this one) I had to use a filter.

I watched the totality on a “railfan” cam out of Princeton, Indiana. The street lights did come on. The thing I think that’s most amazing about it is the 360-degree sunset.

@Scarred4Lyfe — thought Orville Redenbacher was from Brazil, Indiana (same town as Jimmy Hoffa).

It was worth traveling to the side yard to look at for sure.

That looks awesome, I just stayed by my PC. I think if I remember correctly I have seen like two eclipses in my life,

I'd been through a few partial eclipses over the years, 7 years ago it was 97% eclipsed where I live, but a total is sooo much cooler. I can understand how the primitives felt, their awe to behold what they did not understand...

Just a total 'wow' moment (actually almost 4 minutes but). You could hear people around town start hootin' 'n hollerin' in their yards.

Per normal the shots from my 'good' camera are worse than my cheaper one.

It didn't get very dark here. Just like a normal day at dusk. How amazing that you got to see the whole eclipse

I couldn't find any protective glasses, Wal Mart was sold out. I saw this total eclipse when I was a young girl, maybe 13 years old. I'm 72 years old, so that was about 61 years ago. They warned us not to look at the sun during the eclipse, so I did!
