My Heart was in My Throat

Once someone gets something into their head in my family, there is no stopping them. We were surprised to hear that our grandson wanted to attend boarding school during high school, but figured it would pass. He was only in 6th grade at the time.
Not so!
During the year, he visited boarding schools from Maine to New York with his parents and had many interviews. He checked the dorms, food, and ice hockey facilities and statistics.
As a side bar, his dad, my hubs, my younger son, and I, were at one of his hockey games when a couple of coaches from various boarding schools were there to observe him. We didn’t know who, what, or where they were, but apparently they were there. Two were extremely impressed and the decision was later made who would get him.
So…. I’m proud to announce that he was accepted by most schools, waitlisted at some, and not accepted at one. None of his friends were accepted at any!
His decision was made, and he begins his freshman year in the fall at a very distinguished school. Our family is ecstatic for him and all the hard work he has put into everything.
By the way, he and his sister just received high honors yet again on their report cards. We feel so blessed and proud of them. Sorry for bragging, but I wanted to share this with my myLot family.

Once upon a time I thought that I’d enjoy being at a boarding school. I hope that he enjoys his time there.

I hope he likes it. Some like it and some seem to think it is lonely. I wonder why he wants to do it?

@DianneN Does he want to turn pro or something? It isn't like he needs a scholarship to go to college.

@snowy22315 Lol. All he wants to do is play hockey, tennis, fish, scuba dive, horseback ride, act, play his musical instruments, hang out with friends, and sometimes fight with his sister

Probably for the same reason my granddaughter made the decision that she wanted to go to overnight camp when she was 6 years old
He’s used to being away from home due to overnight camps, hockey camps in NY and Minnesota, etc. He’s a people person, extremely bright, and wants a good hockey school. When he was in 6th grade, the high school hockey coach saw him play and promised him a spot on his team. It should also help him get into a great college. He’s over the moon about this.

If I were a betting type of person I'd bet he'll want to come home to stay after his freshman year.
I've never known anyone who was in a boarding school but after what King Charles III wrote about his time in one I wouldn't wish boarding school on anyone.

@DianneN he's at that age when boys just shoot up, outgrow their clothes and will eat you out of house and home

Thanks. He’s used to being at overnight camps and at hockey camps far from home. I’m thrilled that he will be in my state, so I can see him more and close enough that his parents can visit at least for hockey games. I need to get a schedule of what’s up and allowed when the time comes.
I saw photos online and saw the gorgeous campus and landscaping. Hope he does well there.

Things to be proud of there. I like a child who knows what he wants and goes after it. It's wonderful to brag about the most important things our lives-- our kids.

Congratulations to him and to your family. Glad he will have this opportunity and I hope he enjoys it. Might I ask what state he will be in. Just curious because I know that he will only have the opportunity to be with his family on holidays and vacation time.

@DianneN that was my reason for asking I was hoping it was in your state so you could be nearby and visit when you can, I know how important it is for a student being away from home and getting visits. Will grandma bring him some goodies too? You can never have too much to eat.

@RasmaSandra We are thrilled he will be in our state, and he loved the food there. It’s a beautiful and stately campus. He eats more tan my husband, but I will certainly give and send him care packages.

Thank you! He will be in Connecticut!!! I won’t name the school here, and it’s not the t-shirt he’s wearing, although he was accepted there. That’s a boarding school his mother went to as a day student.
I will definitely go to visit whenever I can, especially when he has hockey games. I’m sure if not his entire family, then at least his dad will be there. Dad has barely missed a game since he started playing.

You must be bursting with pride for him, especially with his upcoming freshman year at such a prestigious school! And let's not forget about his sister, too – high honors on their report cards, what an accomplishment! It's clear that your family's support and encouragement have played a huge role in their success.
No need to apologize for bragging – these are moments worth celebrating and sharing with your myLot family. Thanks for letting us be a part of your joyous journey!
